<opener><salute>Dear Beate.</salute>
<dateline>Eymoutiers July 8, 1943</dateline></opener>

<p>I received your post card which
made me very happy, getting
news from you. Now a new
little friend has joined you there,
called Regine. You’ll write and tell me
if she’s nice to you.
She’s generally a gentile, kind
child but she has her whims,.
like everyone does. You asked
me if (’if’ crossed out) that I come to visit. I
will come a little bit later
because my brother has gone away
and if I’d also leave mother
would be left all alone. So don’t
be impatient. But the real reason
that I would come is because
I love going swimming (last two words underlined).
You’ll read on the Paper

<pb/>

I’m already not bad at swimming.
Dear Béate, I ask you not to listen
to Regine. She will say all sorts of
bad things about me. You understand
well that between friends all
sorts of disputes can arise. It’s unavoidable.
You ask me if I got your
Letter, but I haven’t seen any letter.
To conclude, I won’t continue my
chat because what I would like to say
would mean I’d write you a whole book.
Dear Beate, I would very much like you
to send me the address of the other
little girl when possible.
That’s kind of you. If you don’t have enough paper
I’ll give you a tip:
here I’m sending you a sheet of paper.
You fold it and make some margins on
at the edge, and you write the address,
and there you have it.</p>

<closer><salute>I’ll close now by giving you a big strong
hug.</salute>
