<opener><salute>Meine Lieben,</salute></opener>

Eure </salute><signed>Edith.</signed></closer>

              <opener><salute>Meine Lieben!</salute></opener>

Dabei
habe ich die feste Zuversicht, daß Gerhardt
vorwärtskommen wird, denn er ist fleißig und
versteht sein Fach, auch charakterlich ist er
unbedingt zu bejahen. Aber trotz alledem
kann Edith nur allein entscheiden, denn
in solchen Dingen darf man nicht raten!&#8212;
Schreibt doch mal Eure Meinung, Ihr Lieben,

             <opener><salute>My dears,</salute></opener>

             <p>I don't want to send this letter off without my addition, even though it is very difficult for me to write at the moment. When I am writing, I cannot limit myself to mere phrases, but it is difficult to describe how I really feel. There are many problems for me concerning my marriage to Gerhart, personally and financially speaking. It is not yet clear how the whole thing will evolve; for the time being, the question of our livelihood comes first and foremost. It seems almost impossible to me to get married before we have even the most modest, minimal means for survial. After all, we cannot all live on G---'s <unclear>L. P.</unclear> . I have serious concerns about how we can live as a married couple under such circumstances, which will bring enough personal difficulties anyway. You know that G. is here without any financial means, and he only reported the "landing money" about half a year ago, so we cannot count on the transfer to go through now.&#8212;I'm writing this to you so that you can see that I do not want to erect a wall between us, as inevitably happens when there is a long silence. However, I ask you not to talk about these things, nor to mention them in a carbon copy letter, as I have <hi rend="underline">only</hi> spoken to you about them.</p>

             <p>And now to you. Above all, dear Uncle Alfred, my best wishes for your birthday. How much I wish for you that your future may be bright and that it may be in your power to make the future of your loved ones bright, I cannot say enough. Stay healthy, everyone, be happy that you are together and outside, and take great joy in your beloved little Muschi.</p>

        <closer><salute>Warm regards to you all, yours</salute><signed>Edith</signed></closer>

        </div2>

         <div2>

              <opener><salute>My dears!</salute></opener>

              <p>I gather from Edith’s lines, which I am reading just now, that she has really opened up to you! It is a great, great pity that she is not entirely satisfied; I would have wished her with all my heart a truly beautiful and happy engagement period! You can well imagine that I often worry a great deal and that my heart feels heavy, because I sense and see that certain things ought to be different! And yet, I am absolutely convinced that Gerhardt will get ahead, for he is diligent and knows his field; moreover, his character is absolutely beyond reproach. But despite all this, Edith alone must make this decision&#8212;for in matters such as these, one simply cannot offer advice! Do write and let us know your thoughts, my dears, but if possible, in a letter intended just for the two of us&#8212;it is sad enough as it is that we cannot even discuss such things in person!</p>

              <closer><salute>For today, yet again many, many greetings to you all from your loving</salute><signed>Elsa</signed></closer>

<note xml:id="soh.sto005.00865.n01">This letter postdates Elsa Karger's letter from November 1938, soh.sto005.00842, but like that letter references Edith Karger's engagement with a Gerhardt (last name unknown; she later marries Jechiel Bloch) just arrived in Palestine, which make it unlikely this was written more than a couple of months later. Alfred Speier's birthday was March 10, so the letter was most likely written in January or February of 1939.</note>
