Geburt unseres Jungen schon allen mitgeteilt. Gabriel -so heißt Euer

was nebenbei unheimlich viel Geld kostet.
<closer><salute>Recht, recht herzliche Grüße Euch allen</salute>
                                                    <signed>Eure Edith</signed></closer>
</div2>
<div2>
<p>Meine Lieben!
hiermit verehren. Heute kam mir der Kleine
mit seiner Mutti ein ganzes Stück entgegengenfahren,
als ich aus der Schule kam. Das ist für
mich die größte Freude. Und der Freuden gibt
es so viele!</p>
    <closer><salute>Ich grüße Euch alle herzlichst!</salute>

<salute>To all my dear ones!</salute></opener>
<p>When I wrote to you last time, everything was still ahead of me, and
now our sweet little boy is already 6 weeks old. I am so
indescribably happy and grateful, more than you can possibly imagine.
If only the parents had lived to see this! Hopefully,
Jechiel’s parents will still get to experience the joy of having a grandchild! I imagine
you would now like to know some details about the birth, etc.
I’ll start with the main thing: everything is fine. The birth
was neither particularly long nor in any way complicated. I
was still working as usual on Oct. 1; in the evening we were still
having dinner in the Ahawah’s sukkah, even though I had already felt since around noon
that my time had come; around 10 we drove to the
hospital, and at 7:30 in the morning the boy was here. You can’t imagine
the joy with which this child was welcomed by everyone;
the whole settlement shared in our happiness, so many
people had been holding their breath for us. Just before I gave birth,
we had two deaths of young mothers here, one of my coworkers
and a neighbor passed away, that weighed heavily on all of us,
and I must say, I didn’t always feel at ease either, and
if Jechiel hadn’t been the way he is, it would have been much, much
worse. There was also great joy and surprise in the Ahawah.
Although I was already having contractions at dinner, no one
noticed anything, and at breakfast together the next morning, the
birth of our boy was already announced to everyone. Gabriel -that is the name of your
little new nephew- weighed 2 3/4 kilos at birth, but he has
already reached 3 1/2. From the very first moment, he has looked
strikingly like his father, so I was never worried that they
might mix him up at the hospital. He is an adorable baby, thank God
very strong, generally, no one thought I was capable of having a child like this.
For the past few days, he’s started babbling a little,
and every day brings something new and wonderful. A friend of mine, a
neighbor, took very good care of me during the first 14 days, since our houses
are so close together, she was able to manage both her household and ours
at the same time. Now I have help on an hourly basis, because I simply can’t handle
the housework, the baby, and the diaper laundry all at once.
It’s still unclear when I’ll be able to start working at Ahawah again.
In the summer, I can take the child with me and leave him in the garden there,
but during the winter months I’ll have to find some other solution. I’m breastfeeding,
but my milk isn’t enough, so at every meal
I give him both the breast and the bottle. Thank God, the baby is thriving, as
I said, he already weighs over 3 1/2 kilos and looks cute and chubby.
I was overjoyed by your congratulations, dear Falkensteins;
after all, during all major experiences, whether happy or difficult,
one always looks especially for a sign of connection with one’s loved ones.
In my last few letters, I had always sensed how you, dear
Aunt Rosa, were here in spirit, and I was very touched that
you received the news of the happy birth
still in the course of October. How are Herbert and his young wife doing? May they live
happily and contentedly together! Now I only wish
Annelie a truly kind and loving husband as well, but I’d rather wait and see, I
can judge from experience, after all, I had high hopes myself!!</p>
                                                    <ab>November 21, 1944.</ab>

<ab>November 21, 1944.</ab>
<p>I haven’t been able to get around to finishing this letter until now. Today
is Jechiel’s birthday, and to mark the occasion, I took
our first photograph of our little boy. People always say that pictures of
such small children don’t really capture anything, but I think you’ll
be happy to get to know our beloved little boy through this photo.</p>
<p>Liese has been sick since the day after the brith. She first had
typhoid, which, thank God, was mild, but now she has developed a very
unpleasant complication, an inflammation of the sciatic nerve
She was confined to bed at home for a month, but that was terribly
difficult, she couldn’t move and had to have a nurse,
which, by the way, costs an awful lot of money. Now she has been in
the hospital for a few days, and we hope that she will receive intensive treatment there
and come home healthy very soon. In the meantime, Susanne has
been running the household almost entirely on her own, she’s
really a diligent person in that regard, but tomorrow we’re expecting Mrs.
Rosenthal (from Görlitz), who will stand in for Liese and take care of her
later on. But enough now, I have to bathe the child, and the letter needs to be mailed.</p>
<closer><salute>Warmest, warmest regards to all of you</salute>
                                                    <signed>Yours, Edith</signed></closer>

</div2>
<div2>
<p>My dear ones! I’ve been meaning to send you
a picture of myself for ages. I waited so long
until, instead of my <unclear></unclear>, the one of my
heir to the throne was ready, which we
hereby present to you. Today the little one
drove quite a distance to meet me
with his mom when I came out of school. That is
my greatest joy. And there are
so many joys!</p>
<closer><salute>I send you all my warmest greetings!</salute>
                            <signed>Jechiel</signed></closer>
