Board Okays 26 More DP Units
Acceptance of 26 additional DP
units, who will be entering the
United States under the new DP
legislation, was approved by the
Jewish Federation Board at its
meeting May 17.
This number, together with the
previously accepted quota of 120
units, will make a total of 146
units authorized for resettlement
into the Omaha Jewish community. A unit may be a single person or a family.
Jack W. Marer, chairman of
the Jewish Welfare Bureau of
the Federation, which is in
charge of the DP program, reported that
since the program
began some 64 units consisting
of about 134 individuals arrived
in Omaha.
There were three births among
these families which increased the
number to 137. In addition, 14 individuals who arrived directly to
relatives were assisted, making a
total of 151 DP’s who have received service and help from the
Federation since July, 1949.
Mr. Marer also reported that
currently there were only four
totally unemployed, but that a
number of families were being assisted due to insufficient earnings.
Main causes for supplementary
assistance, he indicated, were loss
of jobs, or temporary unemployment; continued high cost of
housing; and large incidence of
illness, hospitalization and dental
care.
Medical and dental services are
given free by physicians and dentists, where such services are required, through the Medical-Dental
Advisory Board of the Federation.
