Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, March 18, 1945

  Hello Honey —

I didn’t get a chance to write you yesterday so tho’t I would try and drop you a few lines now. We are at present on a sight seeing tour in Europe or at least it almost seems as one. Suppose you are wondering what we are doing after reading about the 7th Army drive. At the present time our Infantry is moving forward at such a pace it is hard for us to keep up with them. We land in some town, set up our station and in a few hours repack and move again. Good way to see the country however.

It is quite evident the Germans have been living on the fat of the land. Their homes are much nicer in this territory and they have had more equipment and luxuries. I should think after this ordeal it would be long remembered by them as most of their homes are rubble and ruins. In many communities there is hardly a building left standing and some we come through still had the streets filled   with debris. They usually run a bull dozer down the center and push the cement, stones and boards over to the side so traffic can move.

We are set up at present in a big stone house that was until recently a beautiful home. Some of the furniture is really nice including large cedar lined closets for clothing. It has a steam heating unit, garage in basement and a nice laundry room. Of course there is no water or electricity so much of the equipment can’t be used. Also has a large tile bath with one of the largest tubs I have ever seen, must be at least 3 feet deep. The Germans who were apparently here a day or so ago had left partial jugs of wine sitting all over the place, part of a beef carcass in the basement and several cards, ammunition and smaller items laying around.

Well darling this is about all the news for now but will try and write again tomorrow.

Loving you always Clarence.
