Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, April 13, 1945

  Dearest Gretchen —

Friday the 13th and all in well except I havn’t had any letters from you for almost a week. I know it is no fault of yours so if I don’t receive some soon think I shall tear the postoffice apart.

We received the shocking news about Roosevelt’s death around noon today and of course every one was very much perturbed. I shutter to think of Truman as President especially considering his past record. I only hope things work out for the best. I am quite sure there will be no difference in the prosecution of the war as we certainly have some competent generals. This afternoon we received an extra edition of Stars and Stripes with the story of his death. Think I shall send one home as a remembrance of good old Germany. Phooey!

Watson has been with us the past few days so he and I went fishing this afternoon. Also took along some champagne in case of snakebite. Nothing like sitting in nice bluegrass, drinking champagne and watching that old bobber. Ha! Oh yes I should mention we used safety pins for hooks. Didn’t have any luck but of course that was the reason. Incidentally I would like you to send me a small box   of hooks sometime when sending me a box. You know me and fishing and I understood some of these streams are pretty good. Sure wish we had some of these beautiful streams back in the mid-west. Across the stream from us was an old shepherd with his sheep (about 2000). He wore the long cloak, carried the long stick and had his dog with him. Reminded me of the pictures I have seen of biblical times.

Think we may have a game of bridge after while. Lt Zander and I are going to play Sgt. Cooper and Sgt. Beittel. Havn’t played for a month now so will probably have to learn how.

Well darling I’m all out of news for now so will close. Havn’t really seen any thing exciting to write about recently.

Bye for now dear
All my Love
Clarence.
