Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, June 4, 1945

  Dearest Gretchen —

I didn’t receive any mail from you this morning so am hoping to get some letters when I go to the Bn after I finish writing you now.

This has certainly been an odd day. This morning it was beautiful and clear until about 11:00 when it started to rain. In about an hour it was clear again and in another hour was raining like the devil. It continued raining most of the afternoon but is clearing off again now. I guess it is typical mountain weather, very changeable.

I could have gone to England today on a furlough but it is counted against our furlough time in the states so I decided against same. I would like very much to visit London and the Isles but not to the extent of losing that time if and when we go to the states. There is also a pass open for Paris but as I wrote before, I don’t believe I could take the long truck ride. Also they say it takes a couple hundred bucks to really see the town and it   isn’t worth that to me. As far as the scenery and trip is concerned, I have my fill of that for quite some time.

They have finally given us permission to wear our overseas caps instead of steel helmets during off duty hours. It is surely a relief to get rid of that heavy old helmet occasionally. I think my head is creased where the bands in the liner fit across the top.

I have been sitting here this afternoon on my porch, reading Insull’s new “Time” magazine and eating the candy and salted nuts I received from you. A nice quiet way to spend the afternoon don’t you think? I now have the special overseas edition of “The Strange Woman” which I think I shall start reading when I return tonite. Seems to me I remember of you reading same and telling me it was very good.

Well darling there really hasn’t been any thing of significance happen today and I’m all out of news so will say “Goodnite” and hope to get a letter at Bn. Hq.

Worlds of love
Clarence.
