Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, October 5, 1945

  Dearest Gretchen —

I received your letter of the 25th last night, two days after receiving the one of the 26th. I’m hoping tonite to be lucky enough to get the 27th and 28th.

Jessen and I are going down to the show here in Hallein to see “Endearing Young Charms.” I remember your mention of having seen it and believe you said it was good.

I worked in the C.P. all day and was really busy but the day went very fast. As yet I havn’t heard anymore about the furlough but expect to some time after the 7th. Cap’t Benton stated my age may be a factor to hold me back but I’m quite sure it isn’t even reported on the request for furlough.

I don’t believe this division will move into Germany to replace those moving out. I think they merely meant we would replace one of those divisions as an occupation unit. There are only two divisions in Austria at present ours and the 26th up around Linz. The 26th is scheduled to ship for the states in   either Nov. or Dec which would leave us the only unit in Austria. We are drawing wood and coal for fuel so surely won’t be moving for some time. Incidentally fuel is rationed — coal — 4 lbs per day per man and wood at 8 lbs per day per man.

It is now 7:30 PM and the 3rd World Series game is just starting. I’m hoping I can be lucky enough to win the pool of $18 tonite. I gave the mail clerk $100.00 for a money order that I hope to get tomorrow. I will mail it to you as soon as I get it from the APO as I would like to send you all I possibly can this month.

Honey I was sorry to hear of your having so much trouble with your period — no doubt as you state the coldness at work has plenty to do with it. Honey if I get to come home I promise to keep you warm so it won’t happen again and I’m keeping my fingers crossed in hopes of making it.

Well darling its time to leave for the show and Im out of news anyway so will close for now.

All my love, always — Clarence.
