Hallein, Austria
12 October 45.
Dearest Gretchen —
My second letter to you today
honey but I stated in my previous
one I didn’t get one written yesterday
so this will help to balance up things.
I had planned to see the movie
here in Hallein tonite but Lt. Hunter
ran me down and wanted an order
cut so they could go to Vienna tomorrow.
It was about 8:30 when I finished
with it and too late to see the show so
decided to write my honey instead.
Getting into Vienna is almost as hard to
do as to get back to the states, the big
drawback seems to be because of passing
through the Russian occupied
territory. I would like very much to
see Vienna myself but doubt that it
will be possible the way things stand
at present.
We had inspectors here today from
our Battalion checking records, supply
and our vehicles. Fortunately I had just
posted all my WD Circulars yesterday so
everything was right up to date. Anyway
they found nothing out of order.
Speaking of old acquaintances honey,
we have a young kid in our company
by the name of Pool. He has been
with us a long time but today I
found his home town was Elgin, I’ll
so I asked him if he knew an instructor
in the schools there by the name
of Cartright. He immediately said, do
you mean Roscoe? Also said he had
him for some classes and that he
was now principle of one of their
schools. He also knew Mr. Soam, originally
from C.B.
Honey I am inclosing a money
order for 100.00 and hope it arrives
okay. Might as well build that old bank
account as much as possible while
I have to be over here. Just that much
more for us when I get back. Will
send more in a couple of days.
It is raining like hell out again
tonite so guess we are in for another
long spell. We had three beautiful days
which I guess is about the limit for
this territory.
Honey I hope you heard correct
on the statement that all men serving
at the time of VE day would be out
by July. I havn’t see that stated in
the S & S as yet. I am still hoping for
that furlough to come up in the meantime
but have heard nothing more to
date.
I am glad to hear you are feeling
back to normal again and hope you
won’t have another similar spell
next month.
Honey the boxes of food sound
swell and I cant think of any thing
that would be better than food. As you
say, when I get home, there will be so
many things I will need and then we
can shop together. I hope by this time
you have received my letter saying
not to send anymore boxes until I
can let you know definitely about the
furlough. If by chance I do get it I
have no way of knowing how much
time I will have before leaving for
ship’t.
Well darling, it is bed time so
better say “Good Nite. Sweetheart" —
All My Love, Forever
Clarence.
