Letter from Gerhard's Mother and Father to Gerhard, December 2, 1938

durch das viele durcheinander komme ich natuerlich nicht zum schreiben. Dein letzter Brief war vom 15/11 und brachte nicht viel Neues. Vater ist am Mittwoch d. 23/11 zurueck gekommen und Egon G. s. D. am Montag darauf. Er sieht gut aus und hat ihm alles nicht so viel ausgemacht. Vater war sehr runter, sein Herz, seine Nerven. Ich habe ihn natuerlich nicht fortgelassen, er mußte im Bett bleiben, ist auch mal aufgestanden. Er durfte nicht ins Geschaeft, das war erst mal die Hauptsache. Bei Egon ist der Laden schon uebernommen es ging alles reibungslos. Was mit unserem Lager wird ist noch nicht [?]. Auf das Haus ist [?] ja scharf aber wir geben es ihm nur mit Lager. Erna ist Sonntag gekommen und konnte Egon hier mit empfangen. Sie sind heute mal zu Ledermann um sich wegen einer evtl. Heirat und Auswanderung zu erkundigen. Sie werden dir sicher noch selbst schreiben. Erna ist eine nette [?]. dann [?], sie hat sich sehr nuetzlich

gemacht. Mit Fritz weiß es Vater noch gar nicht, morgen will ich es ihm sagen, mir ist angst und bange davor, das ist das aller schrecklichste. Man muß eben immer die Zaehne aufeinander beißen. Onkel Julius ist 70 jahr, auf dem Transport von Weimar verschieden hat Vater auch sehr mitgenommen. Sie waren ja zusammen und er sagte es gleich er sei so schwach mußte sofort rauß. Alles eine Tragoedie. Ich war zur Beerdigung, Emma hat schrecklich [?]. Stellt es ist auch schlimm fuer sie, wo sie keine Kinder hat. Hast du betrff. Auswanderung etwas erreicht fuer uns? Wenn Egon nur erst draußen waere, ich habe keine ruhige Minute. Viele nehmen irgend eine Zwischen Station nur, daß sie draußen sind. hast du Alice geschrieben? [?] sofort nach Schmalk. sie haben sich so wie so beschwert, daß du nie etwas von dir hoeren laeßt. Fred u. Ruth hatten [?], sie [?] zur Alice u. wandern ueber Kuba ein. Gestern ist Ernst's Braut durch gefahren die gehen nach England heute Nacht's am 17 ten nach Amerika. Traurig fuer Ernst, daß er nicht mitkonnte. Er haette schrecklich angestellt. Sie ist ein zartes blasses Maedel, nichts besonderes was ich in der viertel Stunde fest stellen konnte. Heinrich war nicht zu- seines Bruders Beerdigung. Bei Tilly wurde die vierte Operation gemacht u. verlief gut. Sie denken in 3 W. zu Hause zu sein und wollen dann zu Erick. Laß bald gutes von dir hoeren und sieh zu, daß Egon bald raußkommt. hast du viel zu tun?

With all this confusion, I naturally don't get around to writing. Your last letter was from November 15 and didn't bring much news. Father returned on Wednesday, November 23. And Egon, thank God, on the following Monday. He looks well and it didn't affect him too much. Father was very down, his heart, his nerves. Of course, I didn't let him leave, he had to stay in bed, but he did get up once. He wasn't allowed to go to the store, that was the main thing for now. Egon has already taken over the store and everything went smoothly. What will happen to our warehouse is not yet [?]. [?] is keen on the house, but we'll only give it to him with the wearhouse. Erna came on Sunday and was able to welcome Egon here. They are going to Ledermann's today to inquire about a possible marriage and emigration. They will surely write to you themselves. Erna is a nice [?]. then [?], she has been very helpful.

Father doesn't know about Fritz yet. I want to tell him tomorrow. I'm scared and anxious about it. That's the worst thing of all. You just have to grit your teeth and bear it. Uncle Julius is 70 years old. He died while being transported from Weimar. Father was also very upset. They were together and he said right away that he was so weak he had to get out immediately. It's all a tragedy. I was at the funeral, Emma is terribly [?]. It’s also hard for her, since she has no children. Have you achieved anything for us regarding emigration? If Egon were only out of here, I don't have a moment's peace. A lot of people go to any stopover, just so they are out of here. Did you write to Alice? [?] immediately to Schmalk. They have been complaining anyway, that they never hear anything from you. Fred and Ruth had [?], they [?] to Alice and are emigrating via Cuba. Yesterday Ernst's bride passed through. They are going to England this night and to America on the 17th. Sad for Ernst, that he couldn't go with them. He would have done terribly. She is a delicate, pale girl, nothing special, what I could tell in the quarter of an hour. Heinrich was not at his brother's funeral. Tilly had her fourth operation, which went well. They plan to be home in 3 weeks and then go to Erick's. Let us hear good news from you soon and see to it that Egon gets out soon. Do you have a lot to do?
