Eisenach the 17.1.39
My dear ones!
Our letter from last week is still en route, and yet I already have reason to write again and hope that you are well when you receive these lines. With this, I can confirm to you, dear Alfred, the receipt of the promised 1000 marks, which I received today through the mediation of Mr.
Leckmann from the “Deutsche Bank” in Magdeburg!
As I wrote recently, it is wonderful of you to continue to take such good care of me, and I cannot find the words to express my joy
and my gratitude sufficiently! Now I am well provided for and, God willing, face with greater peace of mind what lies ahead of me.
Max and Lilli will also be very happy, because the earnings have completely stopped! - I'm sure you have already been told that, through the mediation of Gretel Kahn's husband, Eva has found a job in London and [will soon be moving] there with her family. She is also making arrangements for Lore, so that they can come to the U.S. earlier. Otherwise, I don't know anything else of note today, and I send my repeated thanks and warm greetings and kisses to you all.
Your mother and grandmother
B. I recently enclosed a photo of myself, but I had to have some taken for the I.D. card and kept one for you. It's better than the previous one!
My dear ones!
I guess I will also quickly sign this letter. Hopefully I can leave soon; I suppose everyone has to bear the consequences of their mistakes. By the way, my application to accompany Erna as her fiancé is still pending, although we don't expect much from it. It wasn't rejected outright, but the consulate asked for more information. But everything always takes so long and the date is getting closer and closer. Well, she's coming here Saturday—they have all made firm reservations for April 1. I want to get some spare glasses made. What kind should I get? Rimless, metal-rimmed, or horn-rimmed, and, above all, in black or dark, or very light? Here, most people wear light horn-rimmed glasses now. Please reply.
For now, many warm greetings from
Your Egon
