Letter from Max and Lilly Crohn to the Speier Family, November 10, 1944

Heute moechte ich Euch mitteilen, dass ein junges Paar aus Detroit Euch besuchen wird. Der Mann ist Flieger im air/corps und seine Frau ist die Tochter von sehr lieben Freunden von uns. Diese waren sehr hilfreich als wir nach hier kamen und die Frau war eine unserer Zeugen bei dem ersten hearing for citizenship. Das junge Paar wird nur 2 od. 3 Wochen in Lincoln bleiben. Bitte seid nett zu Ihnen. Entschuldigt die Vertippungen, ich schreibe auf einer mir voellig ungewohnten Maschine in der clinic, wo ich heute garnichts zu tun habe. Von uns ist nichts neues zu berichten. In ein paar Tagen werde ich mein 60stes Lebensjahr vollenden, so alt wird kein Pferd. Wir werden mit Hanna und Rudi eine von Lilly gebratene Ente verzehren, um dem Abend eine ungewoehnliche Note zu verleihen. Die oben genannte Familie lernte ich durch ihren Sohn kennen, der Arzt in der Army ist. Er ist auch in Nebraska aber nicht in Lincoln. Er ist ein ungewoehnlich begabter, huebscher und reizender Mann und Vater von 2 Kindern. - That is about all for to-day. The best personal regards and good wishes for all of you,

Liebe Freunde, als wir hoerten, dass Dr. [?], der Captain in der army ist, nach Nebraska versetzt wurde, erwaehnte ich, dass wir Freunde in Lincoln haetten. — Jetzt wuerde der Schwiegersohn nach dort versetzt auf 4 Wochen, so fiel ihnen wohl unsere Bemerkung ein, u. sie riefen gestern bei uns an, um nach Eurer Adresse zu fragen. Es ist mir ja nicht recht, weil ich nicht weiss, ob Ihr es nicht als Belaestigung empfindet, aber wir konnten ja nicht gut nein sagen. Aber ich denke [?], man kann nicht wissen für was es gut ist. Der Bruder der jungen Frau ist eine [?], hat eine grosse Zukunft u. vielleicht kommt er mal nach dort u. kann Wochen spaeter mal behilflich sein. Die Leute sind unerhoert hilfreich. Die einzigen Amerikaner, die hier Interesse für uns hatten. - Hoffe, es geht Euch allen gut. Warten schon lange auf Antwort. - Herzlichst

Today I would like to inform you that a young couple from Detroit will be visiting you. The man is a pilot in the Air Corps and his wife is the daughter of very dear friends of ours. They were very helpful when we first arrived here, and the wife was one of our witnesses at our first hearing for citizenship. The young couple will only be staying in Lincoln for two or three weeks. Please be nice to them. Please excuse the typos; I am typing on a machine at the clinic that I am completely unfamiliar with, where I have nothing to do today. There is nothing new to report from us. In a few days, I will turn 60, no horse lives that long. We will eat duck roasted by Lilly with Hanna and Rudi to give the evening an unusual touch. I met the above-mentioned family through their son, who is a doctor in the Army. He is also in Nebraska, but not in Lincoln. He is an unusually talented, handsome, and charming man and father of two children. - That is about all for today. The best personal regards and good wishes for all of you,

Dear friends, when we heard that Dr. [?], who is a captain in the army, had been transferred to Nebraska, I mentioned that we had friends in Lincoln. Now their son-in-law is being transferred there for four weeks, so they probably remembered our comment and called us yesterday to ask for your address. I'm not sure about this, because I don't know if you'll find it annoying, but we didn't really know how to say no. But I think you never know what might be good for you. The young woman's brother is a [?], has a great future, and maybe he'll come there someday and be able to help out a few weeks later. The people are incredibly helpful. The only Americans who had an Interest in us here. - Hope you are all well. Have been waiting a long time for a reply. - Warmest regards
