Letter from Edith and Jechiel Bloch to the Speiers and Rosenbergs, September 20, 1944

meine Wünsche zum neuen Jahre kommen reichlich spät, da wir ja schon einen Tag nach Rosch-ha-schanah sind, aber Gutes kann man ja jederzeit wünschen, und so tue ich es heute noch und mit nicht geringerer Herzlichkeit. Ich hoffe von ganzem Herzen, daß ein gutes Jahr für uns alle seinen Einzug halten möge, daß wir Schönes und Erfreuliches hören und sehen mögen in diesem Jahre.

Euch, liebe Speiers, schulde ich—glaube ich—noch Dank für einen Brief, geschrieben Ende Juni, er war, soweit ich mich erinnere, Ende Juli oder Anfang August hier, ich konnte damalsnicht gleich antworten, und nun ist die Pause so unerhört lang geworden. Seid nicht böse, und nehmt heute noch vielen Dank, besonders auch für das so nette Bild der Rosenberg–Familie. Ilse, wie kommst Du Dir vor mit so einer grossen Tochter?

Mir geht es G.s.D. weiter gut. Ich arbeite noch immer halbtagsweise, aber nun nicht mehr lange, denn im nächsten Monat erwarten wir unser Kindchen. Ich hoffe sehr, daß alles gut gehen wird und die Geburt ohne besondere Komplikationen verlaufen moege. Mit meinen Vorbereitungen bin ich fast fertig. Das Kinderbett und den grössten Teil der Wäsche bekommen wir von Arieh, so waren zum Glück nicht gar zu viele Neuanschaffungen nötig. Den Wagen haben wir alt gekauft, nachdem ich aber das Verdeck innen und außen bezogen habe, sieht er wirklich recht hübsch aus. Nun fehlt nur noch die Wanne, der Gummi fuers Bett und ein Waschtopf, dann sind wir bereit. Jechiel sorgt wirklich großartig für alles, in unserem Falle kann man sicher nicht sagen "Vater werden ist nicht schwer“. Die Schule hat vor 14 Tagen wieder angefangen. Er hat in diesem Jahre eine schwere Klasse bekommen, 48 Kinder und eine Menge schwierige darunter. Aber die Stell ist jetzt voll, und wir hoffen sehr, daß im nächsten Jahre aus der Probestellung eine feste werden wird. Wann und in welcher Form ich wieder arbeiten kann, ist ja noch gar nicht zu bestimmen, vorläufig nehme ich jedenfalls nur Urlaub von der Ahawah. War es Dir, liebe Tante Käte moeglich, mir ein Kindermodeheft mit Schnittmuster zu schicken? Du hast im vorigen Brief auf meine diesbez. Frage gar nicht geantwortet.—Wann werdet Ihr heiraten, lieber Herbert? Wie löst sich die Wohnungsfrage? Euch, Ilse und Eva, moechte ich heute noch vor- und nachträglich zu Euren Geburtstagen gratulieren. Alles, alle Gute, eine schöne, frohe Zukunft wünsche ich Euch.—Was machen Eure Gärten in diesem Jahre? Wir haben uns auf das Allernötigste, auf die Erhaltung der Bäume, beschränkt, zu mehr war wirklich keine Zeit, denn ich war doch als Hilfe so gut wie nicht vorhanden. Auch in den Ferien war Jechiel reichlich beschäftigt, er hat vom ersten bis zum letzten Tag Stunden gegeben, aber das hat uns auch die Entbindungskosten und noch den Betrag für eine Hilfe in der ersten Zeit eingebracht, sodaß wir in dieser Beziehung uns jetzt ganz wohl fühlen. Wir fühlen uns überhaupt sehr wohl miteinander, ich hab wirklich nur den Wunsch, daß alles gut gehen und so schön und harmonisch wie jetzt bleiben möge. Mit Hans und Liese sind wir durchschnittlich einmal wöchentlich zusammen, scön, daß wir so nahe beieinander wohnen.- Nun Schluß für heute, nochmals die besten Wünsche fürs neue Jahr! My New Year's wishes are coming rather late as we are already one day after Rosh Hashanah, but good wishes can be made at any time, and so I am making them today, with no less warmth. I hope with all my heart that a good year may begin for us all, that we may hear and see beautiful and joyful things this year.

I believe I still owe you, dear Speiers, my thanks for a letter written at the end of June, which arrived here, as far as I remember, at the end of July or beginning of August. I was unable to reply immediately at that time, and now the hiatus has become unbelievably long. Please do not be angry, and accept my thanks today, especially for the lovely picture of the Rosenberg family. Ilse, how do you feel having such a great big daughter?

Thank God, I am continuing to do well. I am still working part-time, but not for much longer, because next month we are expecting our little one. I really hope that everything will go well and that I'll give birth without any complications. I'm almost finished with my home preparations. We're getting the crib and most of the clothes from Arieh, so luckily we didn't have to buy too many new things. We bought the baby carriage second-hand, but after I reupholstered the interior and exterior, it looks really quite nice. Now all we need is the tub, the rubber sheet for the bed, and a wash basin, and then we'll be ready. Jechiel takes really great care of everything; in our case, you certainly can't say, “Becoming a father isn't difficult.” School started again two weeks ago. He has a difficult class this year, 48 children, many of whom are challenging. But the position is now full-time, and we very much hope that next year the trial appointment will become permanent. When and in what form I will be able to work again is still impossible to determine; for the time being, I am only taking a break from Ahawah. Would it be possible for you, dear Aunt Kaete, to send me a children's fashion magazine with sewing patterns? You didn't answer my question about this in your last letter. When are you getting married, dear Herbert? How is the housing situation working out? I would like to wish you, Ilse and Eva, a a belated and an upcoming happy birthday. I wish you all the best and a wonderful, happy future. How are your gardens doing this year? We have limited ourselves to the bare essentials, to maintaining the trees; there really wasn't time for more, because I was practically unavailable to help. Jechiel was also very busy during the holidays; he gave lessons from the first day to the last, but because of that, we can now cover the expenses for my delivery and for help during the early days afterwards, so that we now feel quite comfortable in that regard. We feel very comfortable with each other in general. In truth, I only wish that everything will go well and remain as beautiful and harmonious as it is now. We get together with Hans and Liese about once a week on average; it's nice that we live so close to each other. Well, that's all for today. Once again, best wishes for the new year! With love,
