Letter from Annelise Falkenstein to Käte Speier

Heute möchte ich Euch nur die allerherzlichsten Grüße und Glückwünsche zum neuen Jahr senden. Vor allen Dingen bleibt alle miteinander schön gesund! Hoffentlich kommen unsere Wünsche nicht all zu spät bei Euch an, Mutti machte mir sogar schon Vorwürfe, daß ich sie nicht schon ans Schreiben erinnert hätte, ich wäre doch sonst immer pünktlich!!!

Hoffentlich geht es Euch allen recht gut und auch Du, liebe Tante Käte, hast nicht mehr Deine Asthma-Beschwerden! Wie geht es Muschi? Wir freuen uns immer sehr über Eure große Tochter zu hören, meistens tut ja das die "Oma". Uns geht es gesundheitlich G.s.D. gut. Ohne meine Mandeln komme ich viel besser aus, diesen Winter war ich wohl nur 2 X tüchtig erkältet. Meine Augen sind seit dem Kopfstoßen an der Maschine viel besser, die Schmerzen sind fast weg und meine Brille, die ich schon, seit ein paar Monaten gar nicht mehr trage, möchte ich am liebsten wieder zum Optiker zurückgeben! Jetzt mache ich wieder die braunen Lederhandschuhe für die Women's [?], die ich vorher machen mußte, haben mir besser gefallen; aber danach geht's nicht man muß arbeiten was einem zugeteilt wird! An sich bin

ich ganz froh, daß ich an die Schwierigeren Sachen ran komme und wiederum wäre mir lieber wenn ich mehr schaffen könnte um mehr zu verdienen. Ich habe schon ganz schön gespart, aber noch lange nicht genung um meine [?]. Einrichtung zu bezahlen. Meine Nachbarin, die erst 18 Jahre alt ist und durch Schnelle Arbeit fast [?] mehr verdient als ich, hat aber am Wochenschluß wie was über. Ich bin froh, daß Vati uns so gut mit Kleidung versorgt hat, dadurch habe ich etwas zurücklegen können und trage alle alten Sachen, die ich mir immer wieder herrichten in der Fabrik unter einer gekauften hübsch geschnittenen "Uniform") auf. Übrigens zeichnet das oben erwähnte Mädel wunderbar, Sie würde gern zur "Night-School" gehen aber das ist ihr zu lange: fast 3 Jahre!! Ich bin froh, daß ich ein so nettes Mädel neben mir habe, wir verstehen uns wirklich gut und bei der Arbeit gebe ich ihr deutschen Unterricht, das ist 'ne ganz gute Ablenkung bei der sonst ziemlich eintönigen Arbeit.

Nun habe ich wieder zu lang geschrieben aber einen dritten Bogen will ich nicht noch anfangen, deshalb Schluß. Ich finde, ich kann gar nicht mehr richtig schreiben, man kommt ganz aus der Übung und kriegt dadurch fast 'nen Schreibkrampf. Entschuldigt also bitte die schlechte Schrift.

Today I just want to send you my warmest greetings and best wishes for the New Year. Above all, please stay healthy, everyone! Hopefully our wishes aren’t arriving too late for you; Mom even reprimanded me for not reminding her to write sooner, since I’m usually always on time!!!

Hopefully you’re all doing quite well, and you too, dear Aunt Käte, no longer have your asthma problems! How is Muschi? We’re always so happy to hear from your eldest daughter; usually it’s “Grandma” who gives us updates. Thank God, we’re all in good health. I get along much better without my tonsils; this winter I think I only had a bad cold twice. My eyes have been much better since I hit my head on the machine; the pain is almost gone and my glasses, which I haven’t worn at all for a few months now, I’d love to take back to the optician! Now I’m making the brown leather gloves again for the Women’s [?]; the ones I had to make before were more to my liking; but there’s no going back—you have to work on what’s assigned to you! really glad that I'm getting to tackle the more difficult tasks, but at the same time I'd prefer it if I could get more done so I could earn more. I have already saved quite a bit, but it's still nowhere near enough to pay for my [?]. furnishings. My neighbor, who’s only 18 years old and, thanks to working fast, earns almost [?] more than I do, still has some money left over at the end of the week. I ’m glad that Dad provided us so well with clothes; thanks to that, I’ve been able to set some money aside and wear all the old clothes that I keep fixing up at the factory under a bought, nicely cut “uniform”). By the way, the girl mentioned above draws wonderfully; she’d like to go to “night school” but that’s too long for her: almost 3 years!! I’m glad to have such a nice girl by my side; we really get along well, and at work I give her German lessons—it’s a pretty good distraction from the otherwise rather monotonous work.

Now I’ve written too long again, but I don’t want to start a third sheet, so I’ll stop here. I feel like I can’t write properly anymore; you get completely out of practice and end up almost getting writer’s cramp. So please excuse the poor handwriting.
