Dear Mr. Littky,
I am Faye Augustine's cousin here in California. We have been working closely to gather up some documents of Eli and Anna Modenstein which I discovered in a metal box where my father Alex Bernstein kept his documents. I inherited these documents 10 years ago when my sister passed away in Florida. It was on one of my many journeys to visit Anna and Eli that they told me about the mix up in their immigration documents that prevented them from entering the US before 1949. The posts for them from my father were appearing on the bulletin board of their quarters in the sur name as Bernstein, not Modenstein. Thus the mixup. When I found these documents recently in that very same box I knew exactly how they were related to this episode in their lives. Enclosed you will find the final documents created to aid in their immigration to the states. Through my father (Faye's uncle), attorneys, and congress the problem was resolved and they were able to
immigrate legally to Nebraska, where my father was awaiting their arrival in 1949. I have enclosed each page in a glassine cover for safety. The tissue is very fragile so please handle with care. In the conservation world they would be laid down on Japan paper for support. I suppose someplace like UNL may have a conservationist on staff in Omaha or Lincoln. Thank you for accepting and caring for these precious documents of our family.
With kind Regards,
Sandra Dolmatch and
Faye Augustine
