Legend has it that many years ago the citizens of Ulm wanted to move a large beam through one of the city gates. Unable to get the log through the gate, they contemplated tearing it down. Just then a sparrow flew by carrying a piece of straw in his beak. From this sparrow they learned how to move the beam through the gate. From that time on the sparrow became the mascot of Ulm and found a permanent nesting place atop the roof of the Cathedral.
