Letter from Emily Hughes to Bertha Gottlieb, December 23, 1942

FRIENDS SERVICE COUNCIL FRIENDS HOUSE, EUSTON ROAD, LONDON, N.W.1 EH/NK Miss B.Gottlieb Dear Friend,

FRANCE TRANSFER SCHEME

We have received preliminary information that up to 8th October, 1942, the American Friends Service Committee in Marseilles had been unable to complete the transfer of funds to Mrs. Rosa Stern owing to this beneficiary having left Unoccupied France "for an unknown destination," and that the sum of 2000 francs remains unpaid on this transaction (which equal £ 11.6.6).

Whilst realising the desirability of refunding to you the equivalent of this amount, it is our rule normally only to make refunds on receipt of definite instructions to that effect from Marseilles, as there is always a possibility of beneficiaries being notification to us. Owing to recent events in France, however, communications with our Marseilles office have been interrupted and the necessary confirmation has not so far come to hand. Therefore, whilst refunding to you herewith the above amount, we do so on the understanding that should we, at some later date, receive information that the beneficiary has received the above-mentioned sum or some part of it, you would be willing to reimburse to us immediately the amount due. Meanwhile, will you kindly sign the enclosed receipt form and return it to the undersigned at your earliest convenience.

We very much regret we have not (apparently) been able to complete this transfer and sympathise with you in your present anxiety.

Yours sincerely, EMILY HUGHES Secretary, Relief Committee.
