Je ne sais pas, chère Beate, si vous vous rappelez de moi de Lauterbach; Je suis un cousin de votre chère maman; Avant de rejoindre l’armee je vivai à New-York où je voyais votre tante Flora; Elle est gentile et elle a vu votre announce dans le journal par laquelle vous recherchiez son adresse; Entre temps elle s’est mariée et vous avez un nouvel oncle que je sui sûr vous aimerez; La semaine dernière j’ai été à Londres et j’ai vu votre tante Berta; Elle vous a écrit aussi et j’espère que vous avez reçu sa letter;

J’espère que vous êtes toutes les deux en bonne santé; J’aurais été heureux si vous m’écriviez quelques lignes; Est-ce que je peux vous envoyer quelque chose? Faites le moi savior; Écrivez dans n’importe quelle langue; Ne vous vaites pas de souci, nous tous somes en train de faire tout pour vous aider;

I don’t know, darling Beate, if you can remember me from Lauterbach. I’m a cousin of your dear mother. Before joining the US Army I lived in New York where I saw your Aunt Flora. She is very kind and she saw your notice in the newspaper stating that you were looking for her address. She has meanwhile married, and you have a new uncle whom I am sure you will like. Last week I was in London where I saw your Aunt Berta. She has written to you as well, and I hope that you received her letter.

I hope that you are both in good health. I would be so happy if you were to write me a few lines. Is there anything that you would like me to send you? Let me know. Write in whatever language you choose. And don’t worry: we are all making every effort to do everything to help you.
