Pour commencer notre correspondance, j'ai été désolée de ne pouvoir te donner quelques baiser sincères et quelques paroles avant de partir; cela m'a fait beaucoup de peine. Quel dommage que nous nous sommes quittées, Nous nous amusions si bien ensemble. Même si nous nous voyons plus, nos cœurs se rassemblent en un seul; mais tout de même, je suis contente pour toi, d'être avec ta famille.

As-tu fait un bon voyage ? T'es-tu bien amusée ? Et ta petite sœur ne s'est-elle pas ennuyée ? Comment te trouves-tu en Angleterre ? Es-tu bien arrivée ? Comment te portes-tu ? Je ne crois pas que tu es changée depuis que je t'ai vu.

Surtout, Béatrice, si tu apprends l'anglais il ne faut pas oublier le Français car nous allons toujours t'écrire en Français; à la fin de ma lettre je t'écrirai quelques lignes en Anglais.

Est-ce que tu vas continuer l’hébrew ? Et as-tu commencer l’anglais ? A quoi t’occupes-tu de tes journées en Angleterre ?

Je te remercie beaucoup du savon que tu as envoyée dans le colis de Mme Jeanne; Je l’ai commencé et je t’assure que c’est du luxe ; il savonne très bien.

As-tu des camarades chez ta tante ? Dans la ville où tu es, y-a-t-il du brouillard comme dans la plupart de toute l’angleterre ?

J’envoie mes amitiés à tes tantes qui s’occupent si bien de toi. Maintenant que vous êtes partis de Chaumont j’ai changé de table, c’est-à-dire maintenant je sais à la table de 16em Jeanne avec mon amie qui est venue, celle dont je t’ai déjà parlé. Pour terminer, je t’embrasse de tout mon cœur. Une amie qui pense à toi et qui attend avec impatience de tes nouvelles.

To start off our correspondence, let me say how sorry I was that I wasn't able to give you some heartfelt kisses and fitting words before you departed; that has deeply troubled me. It's such a pity that we've now been separated. We had such fun times together. Even if we never see one another again, our hearts meet as one; but, all the same, I'm happy for you to be with your family.

Did you have a pleasant journey? Was it fun? And your little sister, did she manage to not annoy you? How are you finding things in England? Did you have a good arrival? How are you doing now? I don't believe you will have changed since I last saw you.

Above all, Beatrice, if you learn English you mustn't forget your French, because we always write each other in French. At the end of my letter I'll write you a few lines in English.

Are you going to continue learning Hebrew? And have you started learning English yet? What do you spend your days doing in England?

Thank you so much for the soap that you sent in the parcel of Madame Jeanne; I've started using it and I can assure you it is a luxury; it soaps up very well.

Do you have any friends where your aunt lives? In the city where you are, is there fog like across most of England?

Now that you have both left Chaumont I've changed table, so I'm now at the table of 16em Jeanne with my friend who has come here, the one I already told you about. Comment ton départ c'est passé je suppose que tu n'as pas eu trop de mal au cœur. Je suppose que tu as bien trouvé tes parents. Je t'assure que maintenant je desespère de plus en plus depuis que tu es partie.

Je suppose que tu as déjà commencer à apprendre un peu de d’Anglais. Pour moi tout me dégoûte. Je continue quand même à apprendre un petit peu. Es ce que vous étiez à Paris ? Je pense que tu ne t’es pas ennuyée. Le voyage as où passé. Passez vite. Je t’ai justes donnée quelques mots mais la prochaine fois je tacherais de t’écrire plus si tu réponds.

The way your departure played out, I suppose that you didn't suffer from too much heartache. I assume that you managed to join your relatives. I can assure you that now, I despair more and more ever since you left.

I assume that you have already started to learn some English. For me, I don’t feel like doing anything. Still, I continue all the same to learn a bit. Were you both in Paris ?
