Letter from Flora Schmidt to the Department of State, October 25, 1948

  Department of State
Washington, D. C.
Att.: Legal Adviser
Dear Sir:

A certain law enacted in Germany by the American Government provides for the return to the original owners of property during the Nazi era from Jews and other religious or political persecutees.

It is in the light of the above information that I take the liberty of addressing myself to you for help and guidence in connection with my claims:

My sister Rosa Stern and brother in law Moritz Stern who lost their lives under the Nazis had accounts with the Deutsche Bank in Karlsruhe, Germany. The two children of my sister, my nieces, Beatrice and Susan, 16 and 13 years old, are now living with me. In their interest I would like to file the claims. I was advised to file claims with the Office of Alien Property, Department of Justice in Washington D.C.. This Office wrote me that the time within which to assert or file [deleted] claims against the Deutsche Bank expired on August 8th, 1948.

It seems to me that my claims are within the purview of the law enacted by the American Government in Germany. I would be very grateful to you for advising me [deleted] of the procedure for filing these claims.

Respectfully yours
