Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, January 21, 1945

  My Darling —

Another weekend has passed toward our goal and I have thought about you constantly. This certainly didn’t seem like a Sunday but of course it was very similar here to any other day. I went to church this morning and enjoyed the service very much. Our chaplain is really one grand fellow and certainly does every thing possible to help out the boys. Have been out most of today gathering and chopping wood. We have some small stones in the large tent and in Personnel so it is possible to get warm occasionally during the day. The ground froze quite hard on top last nite but it warmed up some today and got very muddy here in our area. We had a couple very good meals today, either that or I’m getting terribly hungry. For dinner we had cold pink salmon but it really tasted good. The first I have had since being in the army. Also had creamed peas and corn cheese French bread and fruit coctail (“mispelled.”) Tonite we had baked ham, dehydrated potatoes, peanut butter and sliced pineapple. I understand these letters will be held up a couple of weeks but want to write every chance I get even if you get them all at once. Still haven’t received yours but they tell us we should possibly in 3 or 4 days. As yet I haven't been to town so don’t have much news. It is time to hit the hay so better close.

"Bye for now"
All my Love Honey.
Clarence.
