Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, February 3, 1945

  Dearest Gretchen —

So far today I havn’t had a letter from you however it is only 7:00 PM and we have another mail call at 8:00 so I still have possibilities. I just finished having a nice hot shower in our portable shower. The water is good and hot but the wind is really cold when it hits your wet body. I think if you can live through this you will be immune to almost every thing. When we went to bed last night the sky was clear. During the night it rained like hell, this morning it was warm and foggy. Later during the day the sun shone bright and a very cold wind came up and is still blowing. The weather changes every hour.

This tent looks like a game room tonite, some of the boys playing Monopoly and the rest playing Gin Rummy. Think we will probably have a bridge game started in a little while. We havn’t played any the past few nights as we have been pretty busy but are almost caught up for the present now.

We had the General around for a visit today. Seldom we have such a distinguished visitor in this God-forsaken-place.

The war news continues to sound exceptionally good over here. We have radios here which are connected to our power plants or generators. Here we get the news direct from each country, England, France and Germany. Luckily we have one fellow with us who can understand German.

Well honey this is one of those boresome letters where I just can’t think of any news so will close. I don’t think I have told you yet today that I love you but you know that any way. I don’t know why I put still in the above sentence because any change would be for the greater. I some times believe the old saying “absence makes the heart grow fonder” to be very true. Any way I seem to think of you more and miss you more each day -

All my Love darling Clarence.
