Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, February 26, 1945

Part I
Dearest Gretchen —

Well darling I received four letters from you this morning so naturally felt very elated. Received your V-mail of the 10th and air mails for the 11th (2) and the 15th. Im sorry to hear you hadn’t received your Valentine however it was nothing exceptional any way. I have been trying to figure out from your letters just how you received mine. Apparently they weren’t in order according to date from the things you mentioned in your letters. You stated you received twelve and I must have written approximately that number while on the boat. I believe I did write one or two between the date you mentioned not receiving any however that was a busy time for us as you surmised.

I’m glad you are saving the clippings regarding the division as I am sure it will be interesting reading for me when I return. Think it better to do that then send them over to me as I probably would lose them in the shuffle.

Your mention of seeing the picture with “Always” being played so much reminded me of hearing it. Several times since I have been here and every time I planned to tell you when I wrote that I had heard our song. It always makes the chills go up my spine and brings back many happy memories with you.

(Contd)

Part II 26 Feb. 45.

Honey please don’t worry about me as we are really located quite a safe distance from the actual front. Also we have two doctors (we rec'd a new captain some time back) here in our station at all times so you see you have nothing to worry about regarding my health. Does that make you feel better?

So you are planning on leaving Mar 2d. Gee I will surely be thinking of you and especially the following days. I wanted so much to find something nice to send you for our anniversary but guess it will just have to be my love until I can make it up to you. I’m glad you will get a chance to visit Hal & Kay. I would surely love to see them.

We had a fellow in our station today from Grand Island, Nebr. so of course I had quite a chat with him. He joined recently like Fran is shipping now. We were remarking a few days ago about how the GI’s kidded the medics in the states and how different it is in combat. The boys here in the lines treat them like kings [?] them the best of every thing possible. [?] us they have a lot more confidence knowing the medics are close by. Well honey thats about all for today.

All my Love Clarence.

Please send 2 suits summer underwear. Thanks.
