Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, March 8, 1945

  Dearest Gretchen —

Gee honey, I hit the jackpot again today at mail call. I received two letters and a package from you, a Valentine from Charlotte and a letter from the J&R Service Men’s Club. Your letters were dated the 21st and 26th of February and the package contained my helmet. Honey, it fits perfectly and is it ever warm. I certainly think you did a marvelous job especially for one who had no previous experience. It looks tailor made. Charlotte’s Valentine was dated Jan 15, so can’t imagine where it has been laying. I want to write her and thank her for same. I wrote two after yours last night, one to the kids at the store and one to Elsie and her mother. I wanted to thank them for taking such good care of my honey and also thought they may be interested in hearing from me.

I have been working on my laundry today. Had to wash out my longies, some socks and handkerchiefs. Think when I get back I shall open up a laundry as a sideline as I am surely getting experience along that line. G.I. soap is strong enough that they don’t require much rubbing, just let them boil and the dirt rolls off.

I’ve been wondering what you have been doing since arriving home. Think perhaps   it would do you good to relax for a while before going to work. Suppose you have been getting plenty of rest however, but then it would give you a chance to visit friends.

The weather is still lousy here with snow and rain practically the entire day. We really cant complain however when I think of the Infantry boys in the foxholes. We at least have a dry place to eat and sleep.

We are trying to get up a bridge game for tonight with Lt Zander, Sgt. Cooper, Sgt Beittel and myself. Havn’t played since leaving the boys in Personnel so will really enjoy same.

Well darling my mind is a blank so think I better close for today. Perhaps I can do better tomorrow.

Loving you forever, Clarence
