Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, April 4, 1945

  Dearest Gretchen —

Your letters are again catching up with me, received three last night and three agian today the most recent being Mar. 25th. The one of the 8th was the first giving much information on your new job. I think the salary very good especially considering the nice hours with the option of working overtime when you wish. You are really building up that old bank account. We havn’t been paid for March as yet but think I will again send some to you to help swell the fund. Ha! As you say we will need plenty of clothes and other items when I get back. Bet you did enjoy visiting all at the bank. I would surely like to see Jurgie. If you see him or Tallinger tell them I said hello. Sounds as though you and Viola are together quite a lot. I am glad she is there as she is certainly a swell kid. Also you two surely have plenty in common with Pete and I both over here. Was also glad you mailed his address and I want to write him real soon. I think we are quite a distance apart at present but may get to see him at a later date.

Speaking of the nightgown, it must have been something extra special. You stated I would have found you hard to resist, honey, you would have found me hard, period. Ha! And I’m not kidding. Its been a long time since you were out at Gruber but I know one thing I can wait until I get back and see you. Just a warning, better continue on the vitamins. Ha!

I am glad you are getting the picture made honey and can hardly wait until it arrives. I am sure it will be good. I am inclosing one we took just before entering Germany. Insull developed them and they are printed on paper we found in Germany. Cooper and Insull are in back and Miller and I are in front. They weren’t too good but you can almost distinguish one guy from another.

I have received letters from both Charlotte and Dorothy but really havn’t had time to answer the past few days. Please tell them I will write when I can and thank them for me. I imagine they read yours any way so know there are duplications. While I think of it please send me some 620 films as I found a box camera for myself. Wrote previously for some 120 but won’t need them now however I can probably trade with some one if you found some and already shipped them.

I got quite a bang out of the jokes you sent. They were very clever. It seems we never hear any over here.

The weather here has been fairly cold the past couple days with rain and mist however the sun is shining some today. I hope it starts to warm up soon and apparently it should as all the inhabitants here are planting their gardens.

Well darling all for now. Tell everyone hello and I’ll be thinking of you.

Forever yours Clarence.

Can use some more sardines if you can find them. We are on “K” Rations altogether now.
