Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, May 9, 1945

  My Honey —

I didn’t get to write you last night as some of we boys took a long trip yesterday (not too long) but because of traffic jams it was quite late when we returned. We really had an interesting day however as we visited Berchtesgaden and Hitler’s estate. We were right down in the Bavarian Alps and the country in that vicinity is without a doubt the most beautiful country I have ever seen. It was a beautiful day with few clouds but the snow capped peaks reached into them. They wouldn't allow us to see Hitlers house there, but the guards tolds us it was nothing but shambles because of heavy bombing. We did see his eagle’s nest on top of the rocky peak and I took a picture of it but may have been too far away to bring it out on film. We were also in Austria and went through Salzbury. It is a very attractive city and very picturesque. We entered the city through a tunnel of solid rock   that must have been two or three hundred feet long. Just inside was a large city square surrounded on the one side by the solid rock wall of the mountain. The homes are of Alpine architecture and look so clean and quaint. Also saw many of the male inhabitants wearing the knee length leather shorts and the odd hats usually in bright colors with the feather sticking out the band to the rear. The grounds on Hitler’s estate are beautiful with nice roads winding up the mountains. There are also many gravel paths winding through the woods and waterfalls trickling down through the rocks. Up to the timber line there is beautiful blue grass and many wild flowers in bloom. At the floor of the mountains entering his grounds is a very large stream that flows over the rocks and the current is very swift. How any one could sit in such a peaceful place and plan such wars, I can’t figure out.

As yet we don’t have any information as to our next move. We   still hear plenty of rumours but I think all are unfounded. It really gets tiresome waiting around and worrying about the next step. Also suppose they will start some of the same old training and crap we had in garrison much of which was of no value whatever over here.

Today is another grand day with the sun out bright and hot. It is surprising how warm it can get here with so much snow in the mountains so few miles distant.

Well darling I guess that’s about all for today except to say again I love you and miss you terribly.

Always yours Clarence.

P.S. I am encosing this bouquet I picked on Hitler's estate. Two violets and one yellow flower, I don't know what it is. Aren't very pretty are they?
