Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, May 29, 1945

  Dearest Gretchen —

I didn’t receive any mail from you tonite however did get four letters last night, the latest being postmarked the 21st. Thats really good service, 7 days to way down here in Southern Germany. We are only about five miles from the Austrian border in fact clearing is located in Kufstein, Austria.

Didn’t get much for excitement today, spent most of the day over at the pool with Insull, sunbathing. A few days ago we located a small artificial pool at the base of the mountain about one block from our house. It has been made a private pool for we GI’s with no civilians allowed, so we have been taking advantage of same. The water is very cold, I think it must come from a mountain stream.

I can imagine what a thrill it must have been for the Ambristers to find that Jerry was alive. I hope he wasn’t seriously injured.

I just got back from Clearing shortly before starting this letter. I am going to be unit mail clerk for a few days as Bob Cloud got a pass to Paris. He has a brother who is now stationed there that he hasn't seen in over two years so it will be quite   a reunion. I asked him to try and find a special little item for me to send to you. I don’t know whether it is available but if so, I know you would like it.

Honey don’t worry about the pictures regarding Dachau in the magazine, I’m not even sure it was Life Photographer taking the shots I had in mind but I did see him there.

Was sorry to hear of you losing your cigarette case, gee you’ve carried that for a long time. Apparently you havn’t as yet received the cigarettes I mailed. They should be arriving soon.

Incidentally honey, while I think of it please don’t send me any air mail stamps as I can get all I want again. I guess the shortage was just a rumor. I bought 50 of the stamped envelopes today and am sure I can get more as needed.

Well darling it is now eleven so think I will close and turn in. Reveille at 6:25 now, so get up around 6:00. Give my regards to all.

With All My Love Always Clarence.
