Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, June 12, 1945

  My Darling —

I didn’t receive any mail from you today but couldn’t blame the mail man as I went in to pick it up myself. Bob was very busy with a lot of back work and me being the only other one authorized to pick up the mail, they asked me to do so. We really have a trip when we go to Bn HQs now. Its between 45 and 50 miles. We left around 9:30 AM and got back around 1:30 but of course we had several extra stops. In the suburbs of Kufstein the Red Cross girls have opened a clubmobile in a building so we stopped for free doughnuts, lemonade, gum and cigarettes. It is operated by and for our division but of course all GI’s are welcome so it attracts quite a crowd. We also had some boys to go to our rest camp so we stayed there for a couple beers and for dinner. On our way back we had to pick up Cap’t Martin at Co “B” (they are now in the buildings we previously occupied at Kirchbach, Austria) so we really covered a lot of miles.

We were supposed to play softball again today but the game was again called because of rain. It seems every little cloud is filled with rain and it can start on a minutes notice.

I played poker for a while again last night but decided my luck had changed as I lost about $7.00 of my previous winnings.   I guess I can’t complain as I won $42.00 altogether last week so am still $35.00 to the good. I was sure my luck wouldn’t hold forever but it helps to pass the time anyway.

Several of us went to the show tonite and saw “See Here Private Hargroves.” We got quite a kick out of it and it surely brought back many memories of my early days in the Army. We have quite a nice theatre in this town which the Army has taken over for the GI’s. Its a little large for the small Army projector causing a slight blur on the screen and the film breaks occasionally but of course everyone expects that. Last night they were flashing words of old songs on the screen for the boys to sing. Some of the lines were marked for girls to sing and the others for boys. There of course being no girls the guys would try to imitate and sing in high pitched voices. It was really comical and Insull and I laughed till we almost split. When we left the show tonite it was raining and we got half wet walking the five or six blocks back to our castle.

Well darling I don’t know any more news for the present so will close with all my love.

Always yours Clarence.
