Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, June 23, 1945

  My Darling —

I received two letters from you today honey, the 13th and the 16th. The reason I was late receiving the 13th was because it went down to the Co and was then brought back. That still isn’t bad service, 10 days, however you can now address them to me at Unit Personnel Section instead of Co “A”. Then in case some one is substituting for our Bn mail clerk, I will still get it on time.

Have had a little more work today but still not enough to keep me busy. I did cut my first Special Order today and without an error. I took plenty of time of course as there can be no erasures or errors.

You referred to my being lucky winning at poker. The last four times I played I lost, but am still winner so will quit. These fellows never play poker (the boys at Personnel) so guess I will stay winner. I hope by this time you have received the money order I sent home. Just in case you don’t receive it soon, please let me know. I am still holding back enough for transportation home if by chance anything develops.

So you gals finally had your bridge party. I'll bet it was quite the goo fest but know all of you would   have so many things to talk about.

That was certainly quite an honor for Richard Reed to come home with the General. He should have enough points now to get out since the officers critical score is also 85. Ill bet Kenneth is plenty happy over his arrival.

So you are practically on your way to Germany. Gee honey wouldn’t it be wonderful if it would work out that way. However, according to our Div World News, we are going to fight the Nips eventually. I still believe we will be in the states some time this fall for redeployment and my one hope is that hostilities in the Pacific will ceases either while on our way to the states or during our period of training in the states. As yet we are still unable to get any definite information. The article in the S & S stated we would occupy Austria semi-permanent or until a suitable self government could be established. Yesterday, our World News came out and denied the statement so — what the hell — we can’t find out a thing. One day they say one thing and the next day say it is wrong.

Well darling I’m all out of news so guess this will have to be all. Since this is Saturday nite, think I shall visit our enlisted men’s club for a beer—

All my love darling Clarence
