Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, July 10, 1945

  Dearest Gretchen —

Well honey, today is another beautiful day and of course we are all very happy since that type weather is appreciated when living in the field. I finished with my typing and filing for this morning so decided to drop you a few lines now before dinner.

I am inclosing a clipping from our Stars & Stripes that gives some information on the 42nd. It states we will be here for the rest of 1945 but also states there may be many radical changes. None of us are taking too much stock in the statement as we are getting accustomed to the Army changes. One thing I am quite sure of is that I don’t believe we will be seeing the war in the Pacific. I feel quite sure it will be over in that theater by the end of this year. We are all hoping now that if we have to be around for another six months that we will be able to find billets and get off the wide open spaces. They say it starts snowing around here in September and   that it isn’t unusual to have as much as ten feet of snow here in this mountain area. I hope that isn’t true.

Last night after chow, Watson, Stacy, Sol, Waples and myself walked over to a gravel pit to go swimming. The water was very cold but we certainly felt good after being in. The weather here is very sunny, during the day the temperature gets around 80 and seems very hot. After the sun goes down it gets cool enough to sleep between four wool blankets and still not be warm. However if you can keep warm it is wonderful sleeping.

One of the trucks just pulled up with a truck load of beer and I just had a couple glasses. It certainly tasted good as it was ice cold.

Well darling I’m all out of news and its now time for chow so think I better close. WIll also send you a Rainbow Reveille in a separate envelope.

With All my love, Always Clarence.
