Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, August 12, 1945

  Dearest Gretchen —

I didn’t receive any letters from you again last night but did receive the film for which I was very grateful. Now if I go to England I will be able to get a few pictures anyway. Insull just returned this evening and is going to give me a few pointers tomorrow on what to see and where to go. He did say he spent most of his time in Scotland at Glasgow. Said they had a beautiful hotel operated by the Red Cross and that it cost 40¢ for each meal. That sounds like a paradise doesn’t it. Anyway I’m hoping I get a chance to try it. I also want to try and locate Pete if possible however I hardly know how to go about it not having any idea what town he is in.

I was looking through an issue of Life magazine last night and lo and behold they had a lot of pictures in there of the Omaha stockyards and packing houses. I looked for Johnny’s Steak House but did not see it. Surely made me home sick to even read about good old Omaha.

We received our P.X. Rations last night and this time the non-coms received liquor rations. There were only fifteen bottles however and 28 non-coms. They had Scotch, Gin and Champagne. I wasn’t lucky enough to win the Scotch but did get a bottle of champagne.   Miller also won a bottle of champagne so we drank them last night. It cost us $3.63 per bottle and made us feel bad when we thot of the cases full we drank at Wurzburg and it didn’t cost us a cent. I guess all good things must come to an end.

Honey I will be happy to get the book “Forever Amber.” Some say it is fairly good others say no so I will tell you my opinion when I read it. I think I will go down and see the show tonight. Someone said it was Edward G. Robinson in Topeka and stated it was pretty good. Hope they have better luck tonight than when I went a couple of nights back.

According to the radio the Jap War is all over but the signing. Gee how I hope it is the finish and one can soon be on our way home. Keep your fingers crossed honey.

Well darling I’m all out of news again so will close for now —

All my Love Forever Clarence.
