Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, September 24, 1945

  Dearest Gretchen —

Well honey I had another busy day today with a dozen and one things to take care of however Bob returned from Paris this evening so Thank God I won’t be over there any longer at least for the present.

It is really cold here tonite, has been raining all day here in Hallein but snowing in the mountains. Even the lower mountains are completely white with snow, the first I have seen on them since our arrival. Also we have a fire in our room tonite for the first time and it really feels good. I can see right now where this is going to be a long old winter.

Nine of the boys left today to begin their journey home. If every thing works out okay they should be home in about four weeks. All were transferred to a field artillery Bn which I understand has already been alerted for ship’t. I sure hated to see them leave as they were all fellows that came from Gruber with us. They even hated to say good-bye though naturally they were tickled to death about returning home.

I am inclosing a little article that was on the front page of our S & S about J & R. You can imagine my surprise at reading some thing about J & R — way over here in Austria. Think I shall send Carl a copy of it — know it will   make him feel good to think we saw it over here.

I think I shall try and see the movie here tonite, I hear it is Ernie Pyle’s story G.I. Joe. Several of the boys are planing to go so I hope we can get seats.

So Morry and Alice are back in Omaha again and he a Lt. Col. Does he plan to remain in the Army for a while or is he being discharged? Personally, I wouldn’t stay in even at his rating. Incidentally, the Cap’t informed me when he returned from Bn Hq’s today that I was to be a Sgt. so I should know in a couple of days. Thats a long ways from Lt. Col. honey but I’ll take it anyway. Ha!

Honey I got a kick out of the way to find on an old man in the dark but you wouldn’t be able to find me that way. That is — at least for awhile after I get home. Ha!

I was sorry to hear of Kenneth’s illness and hope it turns out to be nothing serious. Has Richard arrived home as yet?

Well darling, guess thats about all the news for today so will close — Bye for now,

All My Love & Kisses Clarence.
