Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, October 20, 1945

  Dearest Gretchen —

Well honey, here I am on my way home on furlough. Watson called from Zell Am Sea last night and told me to be ready to leave this morning. I have no idea when I may arrive in the states as we have no schedule or plans to follow. I picked up my orders at the A.G. office, USFA, this morning and was told that from there I was on my way over. I am authorized Army, Naval or Commercial air travel but all planes were grounded at Salzburg. I hooked up with a guy from the 392 F.A. Bn and rode to Munich with him in a jeep. We had OVER   plane reservations for Frankfort this PM — but none left because of bad weather. We have now changed our reservations for Paris and are supposed to leave at 7:00 in the morning. Our destination over here is the 2nd Reinforcement Depot in Namur, Belgium. Apparently we have to thumb our way to the states because of no planned route for us to follow. I will be sent to the Reception Station at Frt. Sheridan, Illinois because of having the Iowa address and my furlough will start from there. I wanted to send you a Radiogram but didn’t have time at Salzburg so will try and do so in Paris to give you a little advance notice. Anyway   I will phone you when we arrive at New York. We may get to fly all the way but I doubt it so have no idea when we will reach the states.

Well honey I am very tired and also have a headache so think I will take some aspirin and go to bed. All my love darling, and will see you soon, I hope.

I Love You, Clarence.
