Hershel Joshua Shapiro

Hershel Joshua Shapiro, 57, of Denver, died Sunday, March 2, 2014, at his home.

Graveside funeral services will be held Friday, March 7, at 2 p.m., at the Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff with Pastor Tim Hebbert officiating.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established, in remembrance of Hershel’s parents, Irving and Clara, to the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C.

A memorial service will also be held Sunday, March 9, at 2:30 p.m. at Temple Sinai, 3509 South Glenco St. in Denver, with Rabbi Rheins officiating. Hershel was born Dec. 21, 1956 at Alliance to Irving and Clara (Saltzman) Shapiro. At an early age the family moved to Gering where he grew up and graduated from Gering High School in 1975. He later graduated from Denver University and received his J.D. in Law at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Hershel married Leslie Miller on April 4, 1987 at Tulsa, Okla. He owned and operated the Brooklyn Bagel Company and Delicatessen in Tulsa, Okla. before moving to Denver, where he currently practiced Law.

He was very involved in his college fraternity, Zeta Beta Tau; was an active member of Temple Sinai; Cherry Creek Theatre volunteer; A Place of Our Own; and was actively involved with the Leukodystophy Foundation. Hershel was also extremely active in Holocaust remembrance activities including co-founding Colorado Second Descendant of the Holocaust.

Hershel is survived by his loving twin daughters, Clara and Emma Shapiro both of Denver, and their mother Leslie Shapiro; sister, Tania Moore and her husband Terry Moore both of Omaha, and sister, Marlene Shapiro of Las Vegas, Nev.; nieces and nephews, Jill Abrahamson of Omaha, Nicole Abrahamson of Kansas City, Kan., and Levi Zimmerman of Las Vegas, Nev.; great-nephew, Asa and great-niece, Aliyah Abrahamson both of Kansas City, Kan.; and the Audra Weitzel family.

Hershel was preceded in death by his parents.
