Tania Shapiro Moore

Aug 25, 1946 – Sep 5, 2017

Terry Moore sorrowfully announces the passing of his beloved partner and friend of 43 years, Tania Shapiro Moore of Omaha, Nebraska, on September 5, 2017, following lengthy complications since surgery on May 7, 2015.

Tania Moore organized the first SeptemberFest Salute to Labor parade in 1977—a grand two-hour parade that has evolved into the much-anticipated, spectacular Labor Day celebration bringing hundreds of thousands of visitors to Omaha over the past forty years. Tania served as head of Tourism for Douglas County for nearly twenty-five years.

Tania was a strong advisor and confidant to her husband of 43 years, Terry Lee Moore, President of the Omaha Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO and Labor United, and Chairman of SeptemberFest, and were inseparable.

In 1995, Head of the Omaha Chamber of Commerce at that time, Vice Admiral C. R. “Bob” Bell suggested that Tania combine both the Labor Day Parade and the 50th Year Celebration of the end of WWII in downtown Omaha, which Tania successfully organized.

All who met Tania saw her smile light entire rooms with loving graciousness and her enjoyment of life, celebrated each day with her husband.

Born in Europe on August 25, 1946, Tania grew up in Gering-Scotts Bluff, NE, one of two daughters and a son born to Clara and Irving Shapiro, historic holocaust survivors.

Tania is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Hershel Shapiro; son, Terry Moore, Jr.; daughter, Tawni Lynn Moore; granddaughter, Lita Lee Virgilito; and brother-in-law, Charles R. Moore.

She is survived by her husband, Terry Lee Moore; sister, Marlena Shapiro; daughters: Jill M. and Nicole R. Abrahamson, and Tara Lee Virgilito (James); nephew, Levi Zimmerman; nieces, Clara and Emma Shapiro; brothers-in-law, Robert Moore (Mary Ann) and Donald Moore (Margie); grandchildren: Asa A. Abrahamson, Aliyah Rose Racette, Jesse Andrew Moore, Jimmy, Mary Nettie, and Shayla Lynn Virgilito, Jamie L. Gruhn (Daniel), Ashley Nicole Scariano (Robert), and Joseph John Scariano; great-grandchildren, Lexi Rose and Lyrik Taylor Gruhn; and the extended family adopted into the Moore family: Rosa, Kevin, Dominic, and Brooks Kennedy, and Aura Arriaga.

Your thoughts and prayers for Tania, President Moore, and their family are welcomed and very much appreciated.

Services will be held for the immediate family only, as Tania was a very private person and this was her wish. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the Omaha Anti-Defamation League, 333 South 132nd Street, Omaha, NE 68154 in memorial to Tania Shapiro Moore.
