Closed Eyes

CLOSED EYES

In our cozy homes, we hide forever. We hide from death and destruction, believing not to be true. We shadow the light of truth by closing our eyes in fear. The fear blocks out the cries of the innocent who never asked for the pain. When they came to us, asking us for help, we turned them to the cold. We huddle in corners and suck our thumbs like small children. No one can survive when we watch the world through closed eyes.

Presented to Mr. Irving Shapiro on May 2, 1991.

You are one man who's pain represents the millions of Jews who met there fate by the Nazis. This can not take away the pain you felt, but I just want you to know that someone does believe and that their is at least one German who is sorry about what happen. I pray that no one will have to feel such pain again. This poem will forever be dedicated to you.
