Postcard from Gerd Eckmann to Alfred and Käte Speier, November 16, 1938
  Meine Lieben,

Bitte schreibt Eure Meinung.

Bald mehr, herzlichst Euer Gerd

Meine Lieben,

This morning I received a letter from our dear parents reporting on dear Fritz's1 abdominal surgery. Now, at least the horrific suspicion of a violent death is no longer valid, I believe.—Do you have any advice on how to help dear Alice?— My efforts are likely to be unsuccessful. —Egon thinks that by way of a marriage to Erna, he could get over here more quickly, but her entry is not yet a smooth process either. Please write what you think of the matter.

More soon, sincerely yours, Gerd

Notes

1. Fritz Lorch (1881–1938) was the husband of Egon and Gehard Eckmann's sister Alice Eckmann Lorch (1899–1953). Fritz was killed during Kristallnacht (November 9-10, 1938) in a hospital in Fürth, Germany, where he was recovering from an operation. Alice and their son Ernst left for the U.S. in April 1939 and settled in Indianapolis, Indiana. Alice later married Mike Hirschfeld. [back]
