Honorary Degree

Doctor of Education

Roy J. Long
The citation: In recognition of his outstanding service to humankind during his service to the United States of America in WWII and the Korean War; in honor of his outstanding contributions in education, mentoring and inspiring generations of young people and in gratitude of his loyalty and service to his alma mater; the University of Nebraska confers upon Roy J. Long the honorary degree Doctor of Education.

Roy J. Long was born in Blair, Nebraska, and, from an early age, knew he wanted to teach and coach. While attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, he earned his tuition by working at the Lincoln Hotel. On campus, Mr. Long was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, the Husker football team and the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps.

In November, 1942, Mr. Long played all but two minutes of the Nebraska game against Missouri, accounting for 258 all-purpose yards, setting a new quarterback single-game national record. His record of 55 attempts stood until 2004, when Joe Dailey had 60 against Colorado.

Mr. Long’s education at Nebraska was interrupted by the war and in 1943 he served as part of the 71st Infantry Division in General George S. Patton’s 3rd Army and was part of the liberation of the Gunskirchen Lager concentration camp in Austria. The images taken at Gunskirchen Lager, and the first-hand accounts of First Lieutenant Long and his fellow soldiers, documented a terrifying picture of inhumane treatment and cruelty in the camps. Serving as a guard for the American judges during the Nuremburg War Trials, he was in the courtroom to hear the testimony of Herman Goring and Rudolph Hess.

Mr. Long returned to Lincoln in 1946 to finish his education and football career, where he also met his future wife, Charlene Joy Hofmann. He graduated in 1947 with a bachelor of science degree in education with a minor in history. His first teaching job was in Fredonia, Kansas, as an industrial arts teacher. He was also the head football coach, head basketball coach, and assistant track coach.

In 1951, he was again called to service in the Korean War. He returned in 1952 and in 1953 earned his master of arts from Nebraska.

Mr. Long taught industrial arts at Omaha South High School until 1974, then worked with special needs students in the Omaha Public Schools until his retirement in 1984.

In 2009, he was invited by the Institute of Holocaust Education to speak to students about his experience of helping to liberate a concentration camp, the Nuremburg War Trials, and other war stories. His eyewitness accounts help Nebraska’s youth understand the enormity of the Holocaust and to envision their role as citizens of the world who share responsibility for confronting crimes against humanity. As a life-long teacher, he feels very passionate about leaving a legacy for students to remember.
