Letter from Norman Smith to Howard and Violet Smith, December 26, 1943

  UNITED STATES ARMY Dear Folks

Well yesterday was Christmas although it certainly didn't seem like it. We had turkey and all the trimings but it still didn't take a homey affect.

Alot of the fellow's mother's & dads & sweethearts came down to see them. So yesterday I spent most of my time in the Recreation Hall playing in the Batallion Band.

The gifts were swell. That box certainly does come in handy. My billfold was just about worn out. I don't know why I haven't had much to put in it lately.

Say about those Books. I

want you to send me my Physics book and my music book entitled "Kloses". Don't send the navigation if you've already sent it before you get this letter don't worry about it.

Also another thing, when addressing my letters put Co A before the 81st Inf. Tng. Bn. This saves time in delivery.

We just finished on the rifle range day before yesterday. I missed expert by 4 points. In doing so it placed me in the "Sharpshooter Class." I made 176 out of 180 pts. (Total possible 210 pts.)

I have alot of fun playing in the orchestra here. It serves as a dam good pastime.

I forgot to mention that I received a nice G.I. Joe and two handkerchiefs from grandma & grandpa Quammer. Also

got a card from Burrell saying that they were going to write soon.

Irma said that she heard from Uncle Bob the other day. He stated that he was OK. Also heard from John. Nothing new except he has a 6 day pass over Christmas & New Years. Not bad.

I think I'll go over and set pins at the bowling alley this afternoon. They pay 8¢ per line.

Received a card and a Washington from the Walthews. Got your card today.

Guess I'll go over to the Recreation Hall for another Orcehstra rehearsal tonight.

Here in Camp Roberts we have

steel cots to sleep on. The favorite trick is to take all the springs out and tie the bed up with strings. Boy do they fall hard!

Well guess thats all the gossip for now.
