Letter from Curt and Regina Shoenwald to Henry Wald, June 5, 1939

Dein Brief Nr. 12 mit Atlantic Clipper hat uns doppelt erfreut. Erstens kam der Brief bereits am 31.5. früh ½ 8 Uhr an, er wäre bestimmt schon am 30.5. hier gewesen, wenn nicht Pfingsten dazwischen gelegen hätte, es ist fabelhaft schnell. Leider kann ich hier nirgends erfahren, ob es nach dort auch eine Clipper Verbindung gibt. Zweitens freue ich mich sehr über Deine Verbesserung der Position und Zulage und hoffe, es wird schon mit der Zeit weitergehen. Hast Du schon an Benny geschrieben? Von Günther ist es sehr nett, dass er Dir nun endlich die versprochenen Marken gesandt hat, ich weiß doch, was das für Dich als Sammler bedeutet. Ich gebe mir Mühe, Dich auch mit Marken zu erfreuen und hoffe Dir in Kürze einige, nicht alltägliche norwegische senden zu können. Von Alfred und Suse haben wir schon aus London und Madeira Nachricht. Sie befinden sich wohl und kommen am 15.6. in Kapstadt, am 20.6. in Durban an. Mit dem nächsten Brief erhältst Du einige Abschiedsbilder von ihnen. Muttel und Tante Hanna sind kochen und ich sitze den ganzen Nachmittag allein zu Hause, wenn sie aber fertig sind mit dem Kursus, werde ich wie bei Adlon leben, wenn ihnen alles gelingt. Heute hatte ich Brief von Lothar und aus Haifa. Lothar macht mir ganz neue Vorschläge, er will mir die Zinsen ermäßigen, dafür soll ich ihn, oder Gerhard eventuell monatelang aufzunehmen, kann ich natürlich nicht übernehmen.

Ich freue mich, dass Du auch tanzen gehst und Dich sonst amüsierst, ich wollte wir könnten es auch, natürlich amüsieren, nicht tanzen, denn wollte ich mit Muttel tanzen, müsste ich eine Hilfe haben, um Muttel fortzubringen, bei der Stärke. Wir sind oft mit Lachmanns zusammen, aber sonst ereignet sich nichts Neues. Deine Berichte erwarten wir wie immer mit Spannung und Muttel ist immer beunruhigt, wenn es einmal etwas länger dauert.

Auch ich freute mich sehr mit Deinem Brief vom Clipper, insbesondere mit der guten, erfreulichen Nachricht. Uns geht es gut. Tante Hanna und ich gehen täglich am Nachmittag kochen, fast den ganzen Tag.. Mir tut’s ja um den Vatel leid, aber es ist doch nicht zu ändern. Ich lerne bestimmt einen ganzen Teil dazu und kann es vielleicht einmal gut verwenden. Ich habe mich zwar im Kochen ganz gut vervollkommnt, es gibt nichts mehr zu lachen, wenn meine Schüsseln auf den Tisch kommen. Der Beweis: Vatel nimmt wieder zu und sieht viel besser aus. Herr Riss hat uns Deinen Brief nie bestätigt, nur unsere Rosenhahn berichtet noch treu und brav. Marthe schreibt zwar auch, zu ihrem 50sten Geburtstag am 18.5. sandten wir ihr einen schönen, modernen Näh-Korb, den sie uns mit viel Freude bestätigte.

Wir verleben nun den ersten Sommer nach 27 Jahren in der Großstadt und es ist drückend heiß, viel wärmer als in Gr., am kühlsten in der Wohnung. Alle möchten jetzt gern in unserem Hause wohnen, ich meine hier bei Frau L., aber es ist nichts frei. Den beiden Frau G.’s helfen wir öfter. Ihr Patient wird wohl vor September nicht vom Krankenlager aufstehen können. Irma wollte eventuell Suse in London sprechen, fuhr aber später von Burgano weg. Tante Else will uns bald besuchen.

Your letter No.12 delivered with Atlantic Clipper made us doubly happy. First of all, your letter arrived 5.31. at 8:30am. It would probably have arrived already on 5.30. if it hadn’t been for Pentecost, how fabulously fast. Unfortunately, I can’t find out anywhere whether there is also a Clipper connection over here. Secondly, I am happy about the improvement of your position and your raise and hope things will continue on this course. Have you written to Betty yet? It was very nice of Günther to have sent you the promised stamps. I know how much that means to you as a collector. I am trying hard to continue to get some stamps for you. I hope I will be able to send you some soon, not anything generic, but Norwegian ones. We have already received a message from Alfred and Suse from London and Madeira. They are doing well and will arrive in Kapstadt on June 15th, and in Durban on June 20th. I will send you some farewell photos of them. Muttel and Aunt Hanna are attending their cooking course, and I sit around alone all afternoon. However, when they are done with the course, I will live like a king, if it all turns out all right. Today, I received a letter from Lothar and one from Haifa. Lothar is making some strange suggestions. He wants to reduce my interest if I let him or Gerhard live with me for months. Of course, I can’t do that.

I am happy to hear that you are going out dancing and having a good time. I only wish we could do the same, having a good time that is, not dancing. If I wanted to dance with Muttel, I would need help in order to lead her because she has such strength. We are spending a lot of time with the Lachmanns, but there’s not much new to report. We look forward to your letters with great anticipation, and Muttel always gets nervous if it takes a little longer sometimes.

I was also very delighted to receive your letter with the Clipper, especially since it contained such good and happy news. We are doing well. Aunt Hanna and I go to our cooking course every afternoon, almost the whole day. I feel sorry for Vatel, but I have no other choice. I am learning a lot of new things, and hopefully I will be able to use it some day. I have really perfected my cooking skills. It’s serious business for me now when the pots hit the table. The proof: Vatel is gaining weight again and looks a lot healthier. Mr. Riss never sent us a note saying he received our letter. Only our Rosenhahn still stays in touch. Martha also still writes, and we sent her a beautiful modern sewing box, and she thanked us for it.

This is our first summer in 27 years in the big city, and it is very hot. It is much warmer then in Gr., and the only cool spot is in the apartment. Everybody wants to live in our house now, I mean here with Mrs. L., but there are no vacancies. We help the two G. ladies often. Their patient will probably not get better before September. Irma wanted to speak with Suse in London but left too late from Burgano. Aunt Else wants to visit soon.
