Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, January 12, 1945

  My Darling Wife —

Hi Honey, guess where I am. Right again, still some where at sea. Its really getting tiresome riding on this thing and bouncing up and down but then as yet I haven’t tried to the extent of getting off and walking.

I am inclosing a picture I found in a magazine. Quite a coincidence to find that way out here in the middle of the ocean don't you think. Tho't you might be interested in seeing some. Sure will be glad when I can again see the place in person.

I went to a show today and though I had seen it before thoroughly enjoyed it. It was Philadelphia Story, remember. I remember when we saw it. Cary Grant, James Stuart and Katherine Hepburn were the players.

We had what I think was our best dinner tonite on the ship. Cold sliced ham, tomato sauce, boiled potatoes and lettuce salad. Maybe it was because I was so hungry since it was exactly twelve hours between meals.

What have you been doing for excitement honey? Is the Xmas present Leo sent still holding out for a couple now and then? Suppose you are still knitting your fingers off in your rush to get those things completed. I hope you can’t let that interfere with an   evening off for a show or bridge game now and then darling.

I have been wondering if Elsie has heard from Frank recently and if his outfit was again in the invasion of Luzon. I hope he wasn’t in on that deal, seems to me his group have more than had their share of invasions.

Honey, I’ll surely be glad when your letters start coming thru again. It seems ages since I’ve heard from you. I have read each of the three letters I received on the ship at least five times.

I wrote Otto a short letter last night to let him know this was it. Bet he will be surprised to hear although think I had written him that I suspected it.

Well darling thats about all for now but will try and think of something again for tomorrow. Know these are probably tiresome and boring but news is very scarce on a ship.

Always loving you Clarence.
