Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, January 14, 1945

  To my Darling —

Well honey another week end has come and gone, our fourth away from each other if I remember correctly. To me it seems it has been ten times that long. I will surely be glad when I can start receiving your letters again, some how they seem to make our great distance apart seem smaller than it really is.

The war news today sounded very good I thought especially since the Russians have truly opened their winter offensive. If they continue their present push I believe Germany will soon be out of the conflict.

Went to church this morning and we had very nice services. I suppose you went again with Mrs. Mann. Am still wondering how you finally came out with the dentist. Hope you didn’t have too much pain and suffering as you have certainly had your share with your teeth.

I had an odd dream this afternoon while taking a nap. “Dreamt” we were in Johnny’s Place in South Omaha having a nice juicy steak. Imagine my disgust when awakening and finding myself still on this damn ship. Boy what I wouldn’t give for one of those good old Lone Oak Specials. How about you   honey? We had a lot of good times there didn’t we? Anyway, thats some thing to look forward to in the not so distant future. I’m hoping they decide to rebuild the place after the war as Lincoln really needs a place of that type for excitement. If they do we will have to take Frank and Elsie there sometime. Anyway its nice to dream.

I didn’t appreciate our dinner on the ship tonite. We had meat loaf and you know how I dislike that especially when cold as it was tonite. Army food isn’t good at its best but believe our own cooks serve much better food than we got on this trip however we won’t have to worry about it many more days I hope.

Well darling, thats all the news for now or can you call any of the above news. Any way its the best I can do at present.

Bye for now honey
All my love
Clarence.
