Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, January 24, 1945

  Dearest Gretchen —

I havn’t received any mail from you the past couple of days so do not have a lot to write about. I suppose when they do finally start coming in I will receive about ten at once. That of course won’t make me unhappy as mail from you is the greatest event in my life at present.

I meant to tell you in my letter yesterday that I was glad you received the flowers. The round about way in which I ordered from the Px made me wonder. At that time I couldn’t get out of camp to purchase any thing for you and of course the stores in New York were always closed at hours when we could go in.

Your mention of home cooked meals really sounded swell. Think it very nice of Mann’s and Dorothea to see that you have one occasionally. Our food here has been practically as good so far as was served in garrison. We had a grand dinner this noon in fact it sounds impossible for France but we had turkey, green beans, apple sauce, cake and coffee. Not bad huh? Even eating from mess kits doesn’t bother me now in fact I don’t believe I could stand seeing glass ware again. Ha! You might send me a bathtub in your next   package if you have one available. That is one thing slightly rare around here in fact I understand there are very few in France.

This has really been the nicest day we have had since our arrival. The sun even shined for a short time but of course it had to take time out for a shower now and then. It is very, very muddy which sticks to your feet like gumbo. Makes about ten extra pounds per foot to carry around.

According to our news broadcast the Russians are really going to town. I only hope this thing will end in the next few weeks.

I am writing this at Personnel and Sal just received two letters from Betty. Boy was he ever happy. You should see every one beam when they recieve mail.

Well honey this is bout all the news for this time. Always thinking of you —

Bye for now darling
Worlds of Love
Clarence
