Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, January 27, 1945

  Dearest Gretchen —

Well honey I still havn’t had any more letters from you except the one postmarked Jan 5. There seems to be very little or no Air Mail coming there but of course the damn V-Mail is arriving okay. I think its a shame but it looks as though they are trying to force every one into use V-Mail. I am wondering if you are receiving my Air Mails or if they too are being held up.

Honey I just found out there are about 20 fellows of the old Ft Riley gang stationed here with other out fits and one of them is Bill Dow. Remember he was at our house that week end. As yet I havn’t seen him but am anxious to do so. Can you imagine coming all the way to France and meeting some one like that again.

We played bridge again last nite after finishing with our work. You now how much I enjoy that in fact I would rather do that than go into town and to date I havn’t been out of camp. Mr Tollefson and I get along pretty well with our bidding and we won again last night by about 1500 points. He plays Blackwood but decided he liked the 3 no trump deal so we have been playing that way some lately. We have both held some   very good hands which of course creates more interest.

The weather has been very cold the past couple of days. It froze very hard last night and we had a terrific wind also which really penetrated. One consolation when its cold it isn’t muddy which helps some.

Sidney just told me we have passes for tomorrow to go into town. I hope we can find someplace with steaks and french fries. I hear there are a few places that really have good food. This French bread is very good. It’s heavy with tough thick crust similar to Vienna. Would also like to find a store open and see what they have. Maybe I can find something for you.

Mr. Tollefson told me today I was to work in Personnel from now on which made me very happy. he told me a few days ago that he would like to have me and that he would see the Captain. We have had plenty of work to do and especially with cutting wood it keeps us plenty busy.

Well sweet it is time for chow so I must close and grab my mess gear. I hope you are okay and I’ll be thinking of you.

All my Love Clarence.

Honey please send me any canned goods, jams or jellies in that box you want to get rid of. Thanks.
