Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, February 12, 1945

  Dearest Gretchen —

Well honey, I did alright again today on letters, received six including the anniversary card from you. One of the letters was post marked Feb 4th so only took eight days to arrive. I hope we continue to have that kind of service.

I was surely happy to hear that your dental work wasn’t as bad as you expected. Also glad the spot was nothing serious and hope it will disappear after your treatments as the dentist stated. Your letters sound as tho you have a lot more confidence in your new dentist. I suppose the Cod Livier Oil will give you so much pep that I will have trouble keeping up with you when I return. Ha!

Mr. Tollefson, Sgt. Stacy and I went to the show last night. We saw “Lost in a Harlem” with Abbott and Costello. It was very silly but we had some good laughs. After the show we played Pinochle for a short while and then went to bed.

I was a little surprised to hear about Nana even though we suspected her of doing those things. Think it pretty small of her using his allotment for clothes to run around in but then she is just the type. I’d almost be tempted to tell him if I see him. I’m glad   you feel the way you do about your old man honey and I want you to know that I really appreciate it and am doing the same for you. However, I think you know you have nothing to worry about without my telling you.

I’ll bet your leaving Mann’s will seem almost like leaving home again. They have been wonderful to you. I sincerely hope that when Frank and I return, the four of us can some time get together. I’m sure he must be a grand fellow to have a wife as nice as Elsie. Also hope we can some time arrange a meeting with Fran and Mary. All in all we have made some grand friends during “our” Army career. Ha!

Your mention of the full moon made me stop and think. As I remember I have only seen the moon once since here. We were saying today that since our arrival here we have had only two days without rain so you can imagine how gloomy it has been.

I got a big bang out of the anniversary card. It was certainly very clever. Also the one on G.I. Joe. I guess I will be unable to get anything special for you on our anniversary but hope to be able to make up for it soon.

Apparently you still havn’t read any of my letters. I can’t imagine where they are being held up but surely they will soon begin arriving in groups. Yours are really coming through swell.   now and of course mail call here is the big event of the day.

Gee tomorrow we get to take a real bath in a tub. Imagine that. It will be my first since leaving Okla and we get full half hour to sit and soak. Ha!

Honey while I think of it, will you please send me that pair of gloves I brought in. I lost mine and Sol gave me a pair so I should like to pay him back.

We played bridge tonite and Mr. J. and I lost. We had terrible cards all evening however we did bid and make a small slam.

Well darling it is almost midnight and I have to get up at 6:30 so better say goodnight for now. Oh yes, I havn’t told you today that I love you, but you know that any way.

All my Love Clarence

Honey if you want to send me something, send any kind of sweets, that seems to be the thing most of us crave and can’t seem to get enough of. Bye again dear.
