Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, February 13, 1945

  My Darling —

How’s my honey today? Okay I hope. I didn’t receive any letters from you today so of course I am planning on two for tomorrow. I think all my letters are finally up to date now since I have received all the back mail for January.

Well sweet it looks like I’ll again be moving to another location. We received a notice for me to report back to the Co to be collecting station clerk. What type of job that is I cannot say but am afraid its an excuse to get me back for details. If it is I’m really going to blow my top, however I know our present set up was too good to last. I’ll let you know the outcome when I find out the set-up.

I really had a full day today but didn’t accomplish any thing as far as work is concerned. Went to a French barber shop today and got a hair cut. Only 10 Franc’s and he did a very good job. After that we went to the City Hall for coffee and doughnuts served by Red Cross girls originally from U.S.A. but who came here from England. After chow we went for our baths and boy did that seem swell. I even washed my hair in the bath tub and felt like a new person when I had finished. After the bath, attended a stage show at the theatre put on by French actors and actresses. They had a   band, singing, dancing, and comedy and was really very good. It seemed wonderful to see some acts with the players in clean sparkling costumes. I even went to the show tonite so guess I had my share of entertainment for the present. Decided this may be my last privilege to do so for quite some time so would take advantage of some. Saw Kay Kyser in “Carolina Moon.” Not very heavy but enjoyed it a lot.

You asked about the stove, I used it a couple of times coming up here on the train. Had pretty good luck making coffee and think I have had my money’s worth out of it already. Ha!

Honey, I would appreciate your writing me any of the war news again now. It seems the closer you get to the front the less news we have available.

I received two more pack of cigarettes today as rations. Have been getting almost enough to keep my reserve on hand so would prefer you to keep those for yourself. You can include some Edgeworth pipe tobacco some time if you have available space.

Well darling its after ten and I am really tired so will close for now and write again tomorrow. Goodnite dear.

All my Love Clarence.
