Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, June 15, 1945

  My Honey —

Well darling I did better on the mail situation today receiving your letter of June 7th and two packages, one of April 30 and one of May 12th. Thanks a lot honey. So far I have opened only one and it contained several boxes of cheese, crackers, a large box of cookies and some candy bars. Also something that rattles which I presume to be fish hooks. I ate about half of the box of cookies this afternoon and they were really delicious, so crisp and fresh. I havn’t opened the other box as yet because I hear we may move to another location tomorrow and I would rather leave it compact. I mailed your package today and hope you get it real soon. There is a lot of captured enemy equipment, being sent home now, guns, helmets etc, so I hoped it won’t get crushed enroute.

I havn’t done much today, made out my A & D report and went to Bn Hqs this morning for the mail etc. I slept for a couple hours this afternoon because of nothing else to do. After that I started another book, “Strange Fruit,” think I remember of you reading that when in Muskogee. I finished “The Strange   Woman” a few days back and was very happy with the ending, but was mad enough a couple of times to tear it up.

Honey, if we get Army of Occupation I would have to have you share my bed. I read in S & S where some congressman suggested the wives and children of the men have free transportation over here but they stated the drawback at that time was the food situation. Personally, if we have to be here for some period of time, I surely hope it goes through. There is nothing to do here but look at scenery but honey I bet we could find some thing to do. Ha! What do you think?

I just found out we don’t have to move for a few days and I am glad. We have moved so often that being in a place 4 or 5 days makes it seem like home to us. We were at Bayrischzell for almost 3 weeks, the longest period at any one place since the beginning of the push. It was far the nicest place we have had so every one was happy. Insull and I used to go swimming there almost every day and we have really missed that however here of late it has been too cold anyway. The weather has been fairly decent today with the sun shining most of the time but the air is still quite cool. There is still quite a lot of snow here   in the mountains which probably accounts for the coolness.

We just received some liquor from Bn and our section of the station received a gift of St. James Rum. Its really potent but guess no one will get very tight with one quart for about eight guys. I’m getting tired of this kind of liquor and would sure like to have one good whisky highball. All I have drunk this past month was a little champagne and a little beer. I still can’t say much for German beer although they do have some good champagne.

Well darling, think I better close as I’m out of news. Think I will try and drop Charlotte a line as I havn’t as yet answered her letter.

With all my Love Clarence
