Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, September 28, 1945

  Dearest Gretchen —

I don’t have a thing in particular to write about but decided I would drop you a line to let you know I am okay. I didn’t receive any mail again tonite making a total of five days and if I don’t get some tomorrow night I am going to tear out my hair.

Nine of us went into Salzburg tonight to see the show at the Roxy. It was “Naughty Nineties” with Abbott and Costello. Wasn’t very good but did get a few good laughs out of it and it helped to pass away the evening. I think perhaps we may see the one here in Hallein tomorrow, it is supposed to be “Johnny Angel” and some of boys who saw it said it was pretty good.

It has rained all day again making six days in a row. That is another thing that doesn’t help to cheer one up any. The mountain peaks around here are completely white with snow so of course the weather is also pretty cool.

Well more changes are being made around here, Bob Cloud and Ralph Stern are leaving tomorrow and going to military Gov’t. Our 1st Sgt. and 3 other boys leave Monday so I can see where I am going to be a busy boy for a few days. There is no   one with experience as 1st Sgt or clerk and Sgt Stuart who is a swell fellow will be the 1st Sgt. I am to work in supply but know I will also have to break in the new clerk as there will be no one else to teach him the work. There will be no one to teach me supply so I will have to learn it by myself the hard way. Mireles hasn’t been very well liked in supply and when I suggested working a while with him, the 1st Sgt. said I don’t want you to learn his way so here I am knowing nothing about it.

Well darling I really don’t have any more news of interest since nothing exciting has happened. Bye for now honey —

All My Love, Always, Clarence.
