Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, September 30, 1945

  Dearest Gretchen —

Well honey no mail again last night but I think it is partially the fault of our Battalion. Lupa has been working down there and he said no one even went up to get the mail from the APO at Salzburg. I am sure as hell hoping some one picks it up today as I am sure I should get five or six letters. Today makes seven days since I have received one. I didn’t get a letter written last night in fact I was so damn tired I went to bed at 8:15. I worked in the station yesterday morning and then in the supply room all day. The other boys helped me and we moved everything in the place and finally got it straightened up. I never saw such a screwed up mess and we found things he didn’t even know he had. Last night I had to go up and work in the C.P. to write a few letters and get out the field sheet. After I finished that I was so tired I could hardly walk up the stairway to bed. I slept until 7:15 this morning then went over to the kitchen and threw the bull with the cooks until breakfast was ready. I had planned to see the show here last night but at the last minute it was changed to some no good picture and being so tired it wasn’t hard for me to decide to go to bed instead.

Honey, if they decide to leave me in supply, I may be a Staff Sgt. in a few days.   Its funny how fast things can change when there are openings. Now I now how some of these early guys in the Army got their ratings so easily.

We had seventeen new boys arrive here last night from the 66th Division. They are all low point men mostly between 39 and 45 so range about the same as the average in our company.

Well honey, I really don’t have any more news and it is almost time for chow so think I better close. I understand we are to have roast chicken so don’t want to be late. That is one time the guy who is late gets nothing but bones. Bye for now —

With All My Love, Always Clarence.
