Letter from Clarence Williams to Gretchen Williams, October 16, 1945

  Dearest Gretchen —

It is now after nine and I just returned from Battalion and am very tired but did want to drop you a few lines. I wrote out my Radiogram hurriedly this morning before leaving so as to give it to Hudyka to take to Salzburg with the mail. You should receive it some time tomorrow according to the information he received. Incidentally, if ever you wish to contact me in a hurry you can also use a Radiogram but be sure and mark it via R.C.A. They are supposed to be delivered within 24 hours after sending.

Well honey I am officially the Supply sergeant now. I have been down to Bn at Zell Am Sea all day trying to get my files straightened out. Where Cap’t Benton asked me if I wanted to take over supply I told him I would like it if I could get some help getting acquainted with the procedure so the Col. said I could have a man from Bn Supply for a week or two. I got most of the mess straightened out today so guess I won’t   need the helper now. While down there I saw all the boys in Personnel and stayed for supper with Co “D”. They have their mess hall in the dinning room of a hotel — very nice.

Gee honey I was sorry to hear of Uncle Welcome having the stroke. Hope he pulls thru without any paralysis but its not good for his age. I’ll bet it must seem wonderful to take a trip again like the folks going to Manchester. Its been a long time since people felt they could do so, that is legally.

So Fern thinks Leonard may be home in Nov. Gee I hope he makes it and that he won’t be reassigned. All the boys over here are really pissed off over the longshoreman’s strike. I think they would have one hell of a time trying to redeploy any of the units over here if they ever get back to the states.

Well darling I must close and go to bed, I got oodles of work to do tomorrow — Bye for now honey,

With All My Love Clarence
